date: Thursday, February 18, 1999
source: O-Zone UK interview

[Intro, with stuff we all know about Whitney]

W: This is me, in 1998 at 35

WHAT'S CHANGED?
W: Nothing. It's just growth. Nothing's changed, I'm the same person. I feel the same things, have the same morals, same standards, same thoughts, same ethics. I still feel the same way about media as I do, I still feel the same way about God as I do. I have some things that don't change. The growth period is cooler, because I get to work with a lot of younger people. Much younger then myself, who are just brilliant, and who know music all that new.
W: Rodney Jerkins. he's classical piano, does anybody know that? does anybody know he has the classical background? if you listen to his music, you know he does!
W: Wyclef, a genius. Plays any instrument he can pick up, and speaks 200 languages. I mean, [...] these are young people.
W: Missy Elliott in the studio. I was so floored by her knowledge of knowing how to produce. I was floored. She knows what she wants, she knows how to get it. I was an [odd] for her, really. I thought, at 25... 26, [...] female in the industry?! She's working with everybody!

WHAT ABOUT THE ACTING? IS THAT GONNA CARRY ON? ARE YOU GONNA DO SOME MORE, OR ARE YOU BE HUNTING THE MUSIC?
W: I'm not really. I mean, acting is like it comes and it goes. It's something that I'll do because I can. I'm not like I'm running out looking for scripts. Singing, I will always do. [...]. Like I said, I have a lot of options, so I don't think that movies will ever take pressures above music, never for me!

ARE YOU GETTING BORED IN DOING SOUNDTRACKS?
W: No, I wasn't bored, I just didn't know how hard it was. I mean, I jumped into a movie called the Bodyguard, and I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I was working twenty-for-seven. I mean, I was on the set and in the studio. The set, the studio, the set, the studio, the set, the studio. So I had to get here, get my songs in, so they'd be ready for the set. [...]. So I was running around like a crazy woman! I had no idea! I walked [to my mum] and said; "I can't do this. I'm going to quit. I'm gonna give 'em back their money and I'm going to quit". And he said; "So what, aren't you being umbearable to live with it for the rest of you life?" I said; "I'm not living with you like that". And he said; "You're going to finish it, or you're going to be unhappy with it. You're going to be happy with me, or you're going to be unhappy with yourself."

IT'S GOOD YOU FINISHED IT, BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A HUGE SUCCES.
W: Yeah, you know, yeah thank God

WHERE YOU SURPRISED BY THAT, HOW SUCCESFUL IT WAS?
W: Sure, we all were. Who knew. Yeah, I was gonna call it out; "Yep, I'm gonna make a record. And I'm gonna do a [...] soundtrack album of all time. Oh yeah, I got it all planned out." I had no idea. I was in total shock. Really, surprisingly. I like being still amazed by what God can do.

HOW DID THE DUET WITH MARIAH CAREY COME ABOUT?
W: Just Katzenburg from DreamWorks. I guess he figured; Well we need somebody, that we gonna get to sing a song, that has to have some sort of gospel something. Some gospel background, of course, they called me. And they called Mariah at the same time. And I remember him saying; "Well Mariah has agreed to do in it". When in fact, later I found out, she hadn't agreed to do in it, she hadn't agreed to do in any set. And he said; "Well, Whitney's agreed to do in it", when in fact I hadn't agreed to doing it. And when she found out I was gonna do it, she said yes, and when I found out she was going to do it I said yes. So we both said yes, not knowing what neither one was doing, so we were kinda tricked.

SO YOU PLAYED IT OF AGAINST EACHOTHER?
W: Yes, which worked out fine, actually.

BUT I THOUGHT YOU TWO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BIG RIVALS?
W: Yes see, don't ever believe what you read or hear! I never met Mariah right until this time. I never got a change to sit down and talk to Mariah. You know, getting to know her. I mean, because she sings great I was supposed to be in rivalry with her? That is so shallow of people. You know, it makes you wonder about the intelligence of people. Mariah and I never met each other. We met on this thing, we're tight. She's got my number, we call all each other on the phone, we talk all hey. Like girlfriends. It's like two diva's who don't have to be reminded that they're diva's, they just know how to act.

SO, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE A DIVA?
W: What does it take to make a diva....

I was raised by a diva. I suppose that's like 60% of the battle. 2 Diva's, my mother and Dionne [Warwick]. You don't get any more diva then that. I had the pleasure of being in company with Diana Ross. It's the attitude. It's not: "Move out my way, here I come!", "Clear the hallways!". It's walking through and saying; "hello, how are you? I'm so glad you came.", "Hi darling, how are you doing? I remember you!". That's a diva to me! That's true 'diva-ship'.

DIVA-SHIP....
W: Yes

OKEY, THEN THANK YOU VERY MUCH, TOP DIVA, WHITNEY HOUSTON
W: You're welcome darling! (with a beautiful smile on her face)
