Entertainment Tonight Interview with Whitney Houston (12/10/96)
(Interview done by Mary Hart)
ET: With all of your successes is so many areas, how do you keep a level
head?
WH: I just know there's somebody bigger than me. I can't get any greater
than God. I just can't get any greater than that. I have to gain my
strength a lot more powerful than myself.
(Narrative) Never will one find more evidence of Whitney Houston's faith
than in this film, "The Preacher's Wife."
WH: The spirit was so good. It was just so good and loving and everyone had
good things to say to each other, you know. It was a good, good vibe.
(Narrative) Whitney plays Courtney B. Vance's (the preacher's) wife. Denzel
Washington is the angel on a mission to help the preacher and his church.
ET: I was talking with Denzel. He told me he gave you a lot of help with
your singing.
WH: (Laughing). Yeah, that's just like me saying "Yeah, and I helped him
with his acting." Right?
(The scene is shown where Denzel is dancing badly in "The Preacher's Wife).
ET: The dancing... you know, was that just "angel" bad or was that "Denzel"
bad?
WH: No, that was "angel" bad because Denzel is a good dancer. He's a very
good dancer. He's silly. He made that stuff up right on the spot, you know,
so my reaction was really like, "What are you doing?"
(Narrative) The person in charge of this movie? Director Penny Marshall.
WH: I love Penny Marshall. Any day, Penny, we can work together. Any day,
sweetie.
ET: Well, let's bring her in. Where is this woman?
(Penny Marshall then sneaks up and hands Whitney some money).
WH: (Laughing hysterically). You're crazy! She's retarded! Take your
money back! You don't have to pay me for that. Are you kidding?!?!
(Narrative) Of course, the favorite lady in Whitney's life is her little
girl, Bobbi Kristina, nicknamed Krissy.
ET: Was Krissy on the set while you guys were shooting?
WH: Yes. At one point, she and Penny got to direct together. She taught
Penny a few things, you know. ...Penny'd say, "Rolling," and she'd say
"Rolling." ...or "Cut," "Cut"...
ET: Has she yet said to you "Mom, I want to be an actress or a singer"?
WH: Singer.
(Narrative) Whitney and husband Bobby Brown will soon be able to have a duet
there. Another baby is due next summer.
ET: How are you feeling and how are you holding up?
WH: I just get out of bed, I just carry myself (laughing) to the sink and
just start working on it. That's what I do. I try not to think about what I
have to do for the day. So I just start it off, and then it gets better.
And none of that exhaustion showed. Sometimes Whitney gets started and she
cannot stop. She told me that they were filming one song on the set when the
spirit got so into her and the choir that even after Director Penny Marshall
yelled "Cut," they just kept on singing... for 40 minutes. You can hear it
all when "The Preacher's Wife" opens this Friday.
