Satellite TV Interview
submitted by: Lynette W.
date: Nov. 8/98
source: Singapore TV Interview

Below are excerpts of the interview (around 10 mins and songs from her new album is played in the background) with Whitney Houston:

Interviewer : Looking good and sounding good on your new album! Love the hair too!!

Whitney : Thank you. How nice of you!! (laughs) Interviewer: People never dreamt that you'll do a duet with Mariah Carey as they suspected that both of you were rivals...how did you feel about that?

Whitney : There were never any rivalry between both of us, so there was no difficulty.

Interviewer : When Mariah burst into the music scene, she was compared to the great Whitney Houston. Were you crazy or cool abt it?

Whitney : I'm totally cool abt it because the girl can sing and has a great instrument...In fact, I was flattered to be compared with her.

Interviewer : Similiar comparisons were also made between you and Diana Ross when you burst into the scene in the 1980s. Any thoughts of being compared with the Diva Supreme?

Whitney : (laughs) I don't know...I think there is a time and season for everything. Diana has her time, Whitney has her time and so forth. But people like Diana has set a path for other singers along the way, so that it will be easier for other people after that..

Interviewer : Your new album sound streetier and funkier...

Whitney : Goin to the funk master... (laughs) The 2-4 years old today do not know the "Greatest Love of all"'s Whitney or the "I wanna dance with somebody"'s Whitney...they know me as the fairy godmother. I mean this album...I'm keeping up with the times and I'm not trying to capture a particular generation. This is it!

Interviewer : Talking abt the fairy god mother, what do you think of all those Cinderellas out there?

Whitney : Good Question!! (Pauses for a while)

Interviewer : What do you think they can learn or could learn from you?

Whitney : I hope whatever they pick up...it is to be able to balance this crazy business and life...you get screwed up and it makes you crazy and sometimes you don't know who really cares for you and who don't.

Interviewer : The new song written by Missy Elliot - "In My Business", were you trying to reflect your frustrations with the bad press that you have been getting all these years?

Whitney : I'm fed up for a long time. If only they knew what they were saying, it would make it a lot easier. But when it comes down to my child, I'll protect her (at this point..she actually growls like a tiger...: - ))

Interviewer : Having taken time out for your family, is there any pressures for you to reclaim your crown?

Whitney : I never knew that it was taken, darling.. (She turns and looks at the camera with a "menacing" look on her face - Whitney..you go girl!!!) Interviewer raps up with information that she is preparing for her new movie with Will Smith and will be launching concerts worldwide. On the whole, Whitney is in a good mood and looking vey relaxed.
