WHITNEY KEPT OSCAR SHOW ON EDGE submitted by: Francis V. date: Tuesday, March 23, 1999 source: NY Post Gossip Pag WHITNEY Houston had Oscar planners tearing their hair out hours before Sunday night's telecast, wondering whether she'd show up for her duet with Mariah Carey. Planners got jittery when the diva was a no-show for one of the three pre-show rehearsals held over the weekend, according to insiders. "They were extremely upset," a source told PAGE SIX. Carey - who apparently shelved the diva act for the weekend - went on without Whitney and "was a really good sport."
Houston told producers she was having ear
trouble. At one point, says an
insider, Houston suggested that she lip-synch
"When You Believe," from the
"Prince of Egypt" soundtrack. That made Academy
Awards executive producer
Gil Cates nearly apoplectic, a source said.
Houston did make the show - but drew raised
eyebrows from those sitting near
her in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion as she stage-
shouted "Amen" and
"Uh-huh" through most of emcee Whoopi Goldberg's
on-stage commentary.
