CBS's Ratings Are Merry and Bright

A schedule laden with Christmas programming put CBS on top for the week of Dec. 7-13. Here's a look at the week's triumphs and tragedies:
WINNERS:
- Becker. Ted Danson's new CBS sitcom scored its biggest audience yet in its fifth broadcast.
- Whose Line Is It Anyway?
- Frasier.
- Cupid.
- Christmas on CBS.
LOSERS:
- 3rd Rock From the Sun.
- When You Believe: Music From "The Prince of Egypt." CBS took a lot of heat recently for airing some 30-minute infomercials on its CBS-owned TV stations during the half-hour before prime time. But NBC last week aired a one-hour infomercial for the animated movie "The Prince of Egypt" during prime time on its entire network. The special, hosted by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, quacked like a commercial and viewers stayed away.
- Fantasy Island.
Last week's top 10 shows, in order, were: NBC's "ER," "Frasier" and "Friends"; ABC's "Monday Night Football"; NBC's "Veronica's Closet"; CBS's "Touched by an Angel"; NBC's "Jesse"; CBS's "Grace and Glorie"; ABC's "NYPD Blue"; and Fox's "The X-Files."
