WH Duet with Mariah Carey
submitted by: Black Atlantic
date: Monday, August 17, 1998

Rachel, my source close to Babyface has provided me with some very interesting additional details on the recording. The information comes from Babyface himself. Very insteresting stuff!

Evidently, the recording has been delayed because Mariah has not been able to deliver the kind of powerful, gospel-infused performance that Babyface is looking for. Whitney has already recorded her part of the duet, which is, in Babyface's own words, 'amazing!'

Mariah, however, has submitted two takes neither of which have been acceptable.

According to Babyface, the quality of her voice on the recordings has been disappointing. There is even some speculation that her voice is suffering from the effects of marijuana smoking. (please say it ain't so!)

In any case, they are awaiting another take from her (unlike Whitney, Mariah insists on recording her vocals in privacy, without the supervision of the producer). Babyface, who has worked with her before, explained that she is very insecure about her vocals and works at them over and over until she gets it right.

Whitney, in contrast, is a natural, who typically lays down her vocals in one or two takes -- this according to Babyface.

Babyface also said that he would be willing to accept Mariah's mediocre vocals, except Whitney's part so obviously superior that he worries that critics will savage Mariah for being outsung by Whitney. He said that he suspects that Mariah is also worried about being outsung by Whitney and is therefore stressed about the duet.

What's more, the "Prince Of Egypt" producers are none too happy with some of the conditions that Mariah has stipulated for the music video. One producer asked Babyface about the status of the duet. When Babyface explained that Mariah was not delivering, the producer floated the idea of releasing the single as a Whitney solo performance.

We'll have to wait and see. Hopefully, Mariah will get it together.

Feel free to discuss this matter on the BBS.
