SOUL TRAIN MUSIC AWARD NOMINATIONS
submitted by: Sadiq V.
Date: Jan 30/98
from: Electronic Urban Report

EUR/RadioSCope was in the house when the nominations for the 12th annual "Soul Train Music Awards" were announced on Wednesday. Sean "Puffy" Combs earned the most nominations by getting five nods His "No Way Out" CD was nominated for best album by a duo or group and for album of the year His tune "I'll Be Missing You," helped Puffy earn three nods -- for best single, best video and best new artista Erykah Badu and God's Property From Kirk Franklin's NU Nation earned four nods Badu, who will host the show along with Heavy D. and Patti Labelle, says she's in a unique position as a co-host and nominee.

"As a child I always wanted to be nominated for awards and be a part of award shows, says Badu "But I never thought I would be nominated for awards on the same show that I'm hosting So it does feel weird but I don't take it for granted."

Other nominees include Maxwell, Dru Hill and Mary J. Blige. This year's special award honorees will be Whitney Houston and Puff Daddy Whitney will receive the career achievement award, while Puffy will receive the Entertainer of the Year honor.

Meanwhile, "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius used the nominations ceremony to blast CNN for reporting that Notorious B.I.G was killed last March after leaving the "Soul Train Music Awards."

"I don't know, why other than the obvious, that the so-called general market press does not see fit to report 'Soul Train' anything," says Cornelius. "CNN, in particular, has never, to my knowledge, covered the 'Soul Train Music Awards' in twelve yearsYet when Biggie got killed, CNN discovered us They ran stories several days leading with Biggie being murdered moments after leaving (the show) He was actually murdered 30 hours after (the show) was over....so I was very annoyed by that and I will remain annoyed for the rest of my life."

Cornelius adds he took out a full page ad in a trade magazine to denounce CNN, but hasn't spoken to anyone directly at the cable news network since. You can catch the "Soul Train Music Awards," airing in syndication Friday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time.
