Whitney Houston returns with a new film and a double CD; Bobby Brown serves jail time

by: Sandra P. Angulo
Whitney Houston is teaming with "Pulp Fiction" producer Lawrence Bender to film a Civil-War era love story, according to Variety. The '80s pop diva, whose starring role on Disney's TV musical "Cinderella" last November gave ABC its highest-rated Sunday night in 10 years, will co-produce. Although Houston isn't signed to star, she won't make a final decision about the lead role until screenwriter Paris Qualles ("The Tuskegee Airmen") finishes his script. The drama is based on a true story about a female slave's romance with an illegitimately-born white man named David Sadwar who was classified as a slave in North Carolina.

Meanwhile, Houston's greatest love of all has begun serving a five-day jail sentence for drunk-driving and property damage in Fort Lauderdale. A repeat offender, Brown was found guilty in January of driving under the influence during a 1996 accident. On top of the five days, Brown has to pay a $500 fine, spend one month in a residential substance abuse treatment center, attend DUI school, agree to random drug and alcohol testing, and perform 100 hours of community service.
