Whitney Houston wins three NAACP Image AwardsFebruary 9, 1997Web posted at: 1:50 p.m. EST PASADENA, California (AP) -- Playing "The Preacher's Wife" brought singer-actress Whitney Houston three NAACP Image Awards. The racially-charged film "A Time to Kill" was named best movie. ALSO NAACP Image Awards Winners' list Houston was named best motion picture actress, best gospel artist and also won for best soundtrack album at the 28th annual Image Awards ceremony Saturday. Denzel Washington, who co-starred in "The Preacher's Wife" was named best actor for his starring role in "Courage Under Fire." The CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless" won three awards, best daytime drama and best acting awards in the category for Virginia Rowell and Kristoff St. John. The winners in 35 categories were chosen by a special committee of industry professionals and national leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Related stories:
