More from MTV: JOHN: Welcome back to "The Week In Rock," a week in which the U.S. government announced that while 223,000 Americans are living with AIDS, 10% more than in 1995, deaths due to AIDS dropped 12% in the first half of last That's the first big drop in the U.S. since the epidemic began in 1981. The AIDS death of gangsta rapper Eazy-E 2 years ago failed to galvanize the hip-hop community, but on Thursday, the same day the government announced its figures, R. Kelly made opportune use of all the star-power in town for Grammy week to organize an r&b response to the epidemic. Tabitha Soren was there as a song and video were recorded. SOREN: Here in New York City at the state of the art recording studio, The Hit Factory, the r&b community has donated it's time and talent to record a song for the new "Red Hot and R&B" AIDS benefit album, the gathering is quite reminiscent of the 80s Charity chestnut "We Are The World," but this time R. Kelly is the song writer. TONY RICH: You can tell it's one of those songs where it was his personal vision and his connection with God. SOREN: What do you think of the song R. Kelly wrote? TAJ, COKO, LELEE (SWV): Beautiful. Everything he touches, just beautiful. SOREN: So, that's what you sing. SWV, together: That's the chorus. Everybody needs somebody to love. Everybody needs somebody to care. Every nation needs to show them when you're down, you'll always be there. SOREN: Does this remind you of "We Are The World" at all? SWV: Yeah a lot. SOREN: Are you too young to remember "We Are the World"? LAURYN HILL, The Fugees: Get out of here. I went to Hands Across America in downtown Newark, what street was that? Broad Street. Me, my brother and my mother were sitting there (sings) We are The World! MONTELL JORDAN The purposes behind this project is that it has a lot to do with the fact that minorities are statistically doing a lot of suffering according to this disease and that's a problem. JOHN: Whitney Houston showed up at that session later, at which time our crew was ordered out of The Hit Factory. Kelly's people say Mariah Carey will also lay down vocals for "Every Nation." The "Red Hot and R&B" album is due out this spring, with additional tracks by Blackstreet, D'angelo, and Seal. =============
