Whitney Houston vomits on airliner, rushed to hospital

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston got ill on an airliner bound for France and was taken Thursday to a Paris hospital for treatment of apparent food poisoning, her publicist said.

"Whitney Houston was rushed to a hospital in Paris because of severe vomiting. She was sick on the aircraft," said Nancy Seltzer, her Los Angeles publicist. "She is doing well. She has gastroenteritis."

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and the intestines. Seltzer didn't know the source of the food poisoning.

Houston, 41, was traveling to Europe with a bodyguard when she fell ill, the spokeswoman said. When the aircraft landed as scheduled in Paris, the entertainer was taken to an undisclosed Paris hospital, where she was being treated in the emergency room.

The name of the airline and the hospital wasn't disclosed for security reasons.

It wasn't believed Houston would need to be admitted to the hospital, Seltzer said.

Houston is perhaps best known for her rendition of "I Will Always Love You" and her role in the film "The Bodyguard."

Whitney Houston in French Hospital with Stomach Bug

PARIS, Feb 24 (AFP) - US singer Whitney Houston was rushed to a hospital with a severe bout of gastroenteritis shortly after arriving in Paris Thursday, airport officials said.

Houston, a six-time Grammy winner, fell ill on an Air France flight between Los Angeles and Paris where she had planned a stopover before flying on to Barcelona on vacation but airport officials said her condition was not serious.

At the airport the 41-year-old pop diva and star of the 1992 movie "Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner looked tired and was taken to an ambulance in a wheelchair.

She entered the American Hospital in the Paris suburb of Neuilly for a medical check-up.

In a television interview in late 2002, Houston acknowledged hard drug use, saying that she had abused cocaine, marijuana, alcohol and prescription drugs, but denying that she had used highly addictive crack cocaine.

In 2000, she was charged with a drug offence after authorities at a Hawaiian airport seized her handbag and allegedly found a small quantity of marijuana inside it. The charges were later dropped.

Houston said in the 2002 television interview that she had since managed to overcome her problem through prayer and faith.

Whitney's Tummy Woes

It was the greatest barf of all. Or it least it felt that way to Whitney Houston.

The Grammy-winning diva was hospitalized in Paris Thursday after becoming violently ill on a transatlantic flight with what was apparently a nasty case of food poisoning.

"Whitney Houston was rushed to a hospital in Paris because of severe vomiting. She was sick on the aircraft," Houston's Los Angeles-based publicist, Nancy Seltzer, said in a statement. "She is doing well. She has gastroenteritis."

Gastroenteritis is doctorspeak for food poisoning. Per DrKoop.com, it is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by bacteria and can cause diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

No word on what the offending meal might have been. Seltzer declined to mention what airline Houston was traveling.

Upon landing in Paris, the 41-year-old star was ushered to an undisclosed hospital by her bodyguard. She was treated in the emergency room and expected to be released within a few hours.

Houston has been working hard to get back to hitmaking ways after troubled couple of years.

In December 2003, hubby Bobby Brown was busted for allegedly roughing Houston up during a domestic dispute. (Houston later said the whole thing was a misunderstanding, but Brown is still facing trial for the incident.) Then last March, Houston voluntarily checked herself into drug and alcohol rehab.

By the time July rolled around, however, she had regrouped to team with Natalie Cole and Dionne Warwick for a tour of Europe. She also played her first shows in China.

Warner Bros. just released a special-edition DVD of her hit film The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner (which features her octave-shattering greatest hit, "I Will Always Love You"), and she will be seen alongside Brown in his upcoming reality TV show, Being Bobby Brown, which is scheduled to debut on Bravo this summer.

Houston is also due back in the studio next month to put the wraps on her first album since 2002's underwhelming Just Whitney. The album is being overseen by Houston's longtime mentor and J Records boss Clive Davis and is slated to drop by year's end.
