Diva Houston cited for speeding

It's usually her husband who garners media attention for his brushes with police, but earlier this week it was Whitney Houston who came up on the wrong side of the law.

The pop music great was cited for speeding by Gwinnett County police while she was returning to a drug rehabilitation program.

According to a police report, Houston was driving a 2004 Porsche Cayenne on Satellite Boulevard in Duluth on Tuesday morning when she was clocked going 68 mph in a 45 mph zone. Houston, who recently checked herself into the rehab center, was returning from taking her daughter to school, said the singer's attorney Mark Trigg.

Gwinnett police described the traffic stop as business as usual. "There was no incident between [Houston] and the officer," said Gwinnett police Cpl. Dan Huggins. "She is one of the numerous citizens that are cited for speeding every day."

Houston's whereabouts has been a news item since it was announced in March that she had checked herself into the rehabilitation center.

Houston had permission from her program to take the trip, Trigg said.

Houston is allowed to take trips outside the rehabilitation center for family-related activities, Trigg said.

The singer also made an authorized appearance in the audience of a sold-out Beyoncé-Alicia Keys-Missy Elliott show at Philips Arena last Sunday.

She's scheduled to appear in court on May 15 for the traffic offense.

The singer's speeding citation is minor compared to the police record amassed by her husband, singer Bobby Brown.

Brown recently spent about two months in the DeKalb County jail for violating terms of his probation on drunken-driving charges. Two weeks ago, Brown was released from the jail so that he could attend a court hearing in Virginia to answer charges of unpaid child support. Brown had to spend a night in jail for failing to pay $63,500 in child support.
