CANTON, Mass. -- Singer Bobby Brown appeared before a family court judge on Friday, one day after he was released from jail after paying $63,500 in child support payments he owed the mother of two of his children.

Family court judge Paula M. Carey ordered Brown in the brief appearance to immediately apply for a life insurance policy to benefit the children, now 12 and 14, and also gave him 90 days to establish an educational trust fund for the children.

Brown had agreed on the life insurance policy and the education fund 10 years ago, but had never followed through on them.

He was also ordered to appear in court in 90 days to see if he has complied with the judge's orders.

Carey had found the troubled former pop star in contempt of court Wednesday and ordered him jailed until he could come up with the money.

Brown was released from jail a day later after spending a night behind bars for failing to pay the child support.

Brown, who is married to pop star Whitney Houston, had said he was unable to pay the child support he owes for the children that he fathered with Kim Ward of Stoughton, who filed the paternity claim.

Singer owed $63,500 in child support

DEDHAM, Massachusetts -- Singer Bobby Brown was released from the county jail Thursday after spending a night behind bars for failing to pay $63,500 in child support.

Brown was released after the Norfolk Probate and Family Court received the money.

"I thought it was paid," Brown told reporters as he left, calling the matter a "misunderstanding."

"Things happen like that when other people are dealing with your business," he said.

Brown was due back in Family Court on Friday morning. The judge had ordered him to return after the child support was paid.

On Wednesday, Family Court Judge Paula Carey found Brown in contempt of court and ordered him jailed for 90 days or until he could come up with the money.

Brown, a Boston native, had testified that he was unable to pay the child support he owes for the children, now 12 and 14, that he fathered with Kim Ward of Stoughton.

Brown had been released three days early from a jail in DeKalb County, Ga., so he could attend the Massachusetts hearing.

In Georgia, Brown had been serving a 60-day sentence for violating his probation on a drunken driving charge. The violations included his refusal to take drug tests and pay his probation fees, and failing to show proof that he attended counseling and completed his house arrest.

Brown also faces misdemeanor battery charges after he allegedly hit his wife, singer Whitney Houston, leaving her with a bruised cheek and a cut lip. He's scheduled to appear May 5 in a Fulton County, Ga., court on that charge.

Brown left R&B group New Edition in the late 1980s for a solo career. His hits include "My Prerogative" and "Every Little Step," but he has become more famous for his numerous brushes with the law and his turbulent marriage with Houston. The couple lives in the Atlanta area.

Singer To Pay Thousands In Back Child Support

CANTON, Mass. -- Singer Bobby Brown appeared before a family court judge Friday in Massachusetts, a day after he paid $63,500 in back child support to get out of jail.

NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported that Brown left the court Thursday and took his two children out to dinner. He arrived at the court promptly at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

According to court records, in 1994, Brown was worth $5 million, but a decade later, the husband of singer Whitney Houston claims he is unemployed and broke.

"My children had to know, so, and they know their father, and they know their father loves them a lot and that's something you don't see on TV. That is something in my heart," said Brown.

What was seen on television was Brown in handcuffs Wednesday being taken to jail for nonsupport of his 15-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter.

Brown, who grew up in Roxbury, was released late Thursday, after coming up with checks totaling $63,500.

"It was just like I said, a misunderstanding on my behalf and the people who worked for me at the time. They don't work for me any longer, and now things will be better and things will be, the checks will get there a lot sooner than later," said Brown.

Brown was given 90 days to meet other court requirements, including setting up college funds and taking out a $500,000 life insurance policy with his children as beneficiaries.

Brown said he has a new album and a movie role lined up -- enough to keep his children's finances in order. If he fails to meet the court requirements, he will be back in court in June.

Brown is also due in a Georgia court in May to face charges of physically abusing Houston.

Beleaguered Beantown bad boy Bobby Brown was sprung from a Dedham jail last night after spending a day in stir, where sources say he doffed his shirt and worked on his rusty dance steps.

"I'm going to pick up my children," Brown, flashing a peace sign, told reporters as he drove from the Norfolk House of Correction with his brother last night.

The pop star-turned-deadbeat dad was freed about 5:30 p.m. after the jail received confirmation he had settled his $63,000 child support debt, said David Falcone, spokesman for Norfolk Sheriff Michael Bellotti.

Brown, who fell behind on his monthly $5,500 child support payments to ex-girlfriend Kim Ward, was locked up Wednesday by Judge Paula Carey and was facing 90 days in jail. He is expected back in Canton probate court today.

Brown spent Wednesday night in an isolated cell in the jail's medical unit, which is common for new inmates. A jailhouse source told the Herald he took off his shirt at one point and practiced his dance moves.

Brown would have been moved into a pre-trial unit today had he not settled the debt. He reportedly cut two separate checks to the court but where the money came from was unclear last night. In the past, he told Carey, payments had been made by his diva wife, Whitney Houston, who reportedly left a drug rehab this week. Brown claims he is unemployed and unable to make the lofty monthly payments.

The Roxbury-bred former New Edition singer was released from a Georgia jail Monday where he had been held on drunk driving and drug charges.
