Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown Meet With Israeli Prime Minister

Date: May 29, 2003

Not since Michael Jackson crossed paths with "Kosher Sex" Rabbi Shmuley Boteach or Sammy Davis Jr. had his bar mitzvah have relations between black pop stars and the Jewish people been this good.

Whitney Houston and her husband Bobby Brown have embarked on a "spiritual retreat" to Israel, according to her director of publicity. It's the couple's first trip to the Holy Land.

While Houston's publicist stressed that the trip has no political implications whatsoever, the high-profile couple met with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and held a press conference on Monday. "It's home. It's a friendship I've never had with any other country," Houston said.

Brown, Houston and daughter Bobbi Kristina are staying in the desert town of Dimona among a community of Black Hebrews. Not to be confused with falashas (Ethiopian Jews), the Black Hebrews are a religious community founded in Chicago during the late '60s that approves of polygamy, frowns on birth control and encourages members to abandon "slave names" in favor of biblical monikers. Houston's family has had ties to the Black Hebrews for years.

Houston is considering shooting a Christmas special and recording a Christmas album in Dimona during her week-long stay, her publicist said.
