Deborah Cox Talks About Whitney

Deborah Cox Interview Excerpts

Her musical inspirations: Starting out I listened to a lot of different people. I listened to a lot of Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway.

Comparisons to Whitney Houston during early stages of her career: In the beginning it was flattering but after a while it became a lot of pressure. I felt like I was being compared to someone who had been in the business, well, at the time she had released three albums and sold a gang of records. How could I compete with that? I let people say what they wanted to say and I never held any unrealistic expectations for myself. I just stayed focused and did my own thing. I knew that over time my own style would speak for itself. I think also writing my own songs have helped me with developing my own style and personality in the music.

Working with Whitney on the song "Same Script, Different Cast": That was a dream come true. She's been my mentor because she was, like, the first black female artist that got played mainstream in Canada. We didn't have any black stations then. We just got a black radio station. She was played a lot in the '80s. So when I got the call to do the duet with her, I was like, 'Yeah! I'm down.' She's the epitome of what a great vocalist is. So we got a chance to do the song, and we really connected on a musical level. She's like a big sister that kind of schooled me on some of the other sides of this business I haven't encountered yet.

Hearing about Whitney's alleged drug problems and peculiar behaviors: My experiences have been only on a professional basis. Although I have hung out with her, I'm not all in her personal life to neither confirm nor deny any of those statements. It's crazy to hear that stuff about a person that you know.
