Girls Quiz Director Marshall submitted by: Lisa D. source: San Francisco Chronicle Date: July 20, 2001 Garry Marshall may have directed "Pretty Woman" and "Runaway Bride" and created TV's "Happy Days," but that doesn't explain the line of adolescent girls waiting to get his autograph at the AMC 1000 on Tuesday evening. To them, he's famous for playing Drew Barrymore's boss in "Never Been Kissed." Marshall made "The Princess Diaries" -- starring Anne Hathaway as a San Francisco teen who discovers that she is royalty and Julie Andrews as her queen-grandmother -- for girls like the autograph seekers. After a screening, he told the SRO crowd that market research on the movie found that girls 10 through 13 preferred Hathaway's drop-dead gorgeous suitor (Erik von Detten) to her nerdy beau (Robert Schwartzman). "But girls 14 and over had had their hearts broken by boys who look like Erik, and they liked Robert better," he said. Speaking of heartbreakers, Marshall said he was sad that Julia Roberts had broken up with Benjamin Bratt. "It's hard to have a relationship these days." When Marshall worked with her and Richard Gere on "Pretty Woman," none of them was in demand, and the three would sit around between takes and listen to Gere play the guitar. "But on 'Runaway Bride,' they both had cell phones on the set. Richard would be booking the Dalai Lama, and Julia was saving orphans in Haiti. I was afraid that if I tore her away, an orphan might be lost." A youngster seated in the front asked Marshall if being a director is fun. "Well, I can tell you that on my birthday, Whitney Houston, who's a producer on my movie, and Julie Andrews came with a cake and sang 'Happy Birthday.' I'd call that fun."
