Feeling Charitable Toward Jax

Tickets for the best seats at Michael Jackson's Madison Square Garden concerts on Sept. 7 and 10 are selling for charity-level prices, even though no charity will benefit from the event.

Incredibly, none of the celebrities involved in the evening seem to mind.

I reported last week that Jackson's promoter, David Gest, had sent invitations to affluent people in hopes they might be moved to pay upwards of $50,000 for 10 tickets to the show (the deal includes a gala dinner at Tavern on the Green). Overwhelmingly, the celebs I spoke with were not at all concerned that the 42-year-old singer and his promoter will profit.

Yoko Ono, who is serving with her son, Sean Lennon, on the organizing committee, believes that "Michael has had such a difficult time during his exile years. Artist to artist, it's time for him to be recognized regardless of what has gone on in his private life. He's been punished enough."

Whitney Houston, who is not getting paid to perform, was likewise unfazed. "Whitney agreed to do this because she wants to support Michael," said her rep, Nancy Seltzer.

Marc Anthony's spokeswoman said the Latin singer's management had no knowledge the promoters were charging so much money. But Anthony is also on board.

"The one and only reason he's doing the show is that he loves and admires Michael and wants to support him," said Anthony's spokeswoman. "I know they don't know specifics. It was more a friendship thing."
