Whitney's Hawaii Court Case Resolved submitted by: Lisa D. source: Associated Press Date: November 2, 2000 Whitney Houston marijuana-possession case resolved, attorney says KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii -- An attorney for Whitney Houston said the pop star won't have to serve any jail time as a result of a marijuana-possession charge against her. Honolulu attorney Brook Hart said the case was resolved at a hearing Thursday in Kona District Court. Houston did not attend the hearing, but attorneys from Hawaii and her home state of New Jersey appeared on her behalf. Hart said Judge Joseph Florendo granted a differed acceptance of no-contest plea, meaning Houston will have no record of a marijuana-possession conviction after three months if she meets certain terms and conditions. Hart would not elaborate on those conditions, other than to say they are "standard." The charge stemmed from a Jan. 11 incident at Keahole-Kona International Airport. Houston's handbag was seized by a security guard, and police reported it contained half an ounce of marijuana. Houston and her husband, Bobby Brown, boarded a flight to San Francisco before police arrived. The petty misdemeanor charge carried a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
