Anne Hathaway has inked a deal to topline helmer Garry Marshall's "The
Princess Diaries" for the Mouse House.
The young thesp, who made a name for herself in the critically acclaimed
though short-lived Fox series "Get Real," will topline "Diaries," which
has been greenlit and is to begin lensing this September.
The "Diaries" script, via Gina Wendkos ("Coyote Ugly") and based on a
Meg Cabot novel, concerns itself with a rebellious 16-year-old Angeleno
who is informed that she is actually the princess of a Monaco-like European
nation.
Hathaway is also starring in the upcoming Mitch Davis-scripted and helmed
"The Eye of the Storm," an indie pic about a young missionary who ventures
to the island of Tonga.
"Diaries" is being produced by Whitney Houston and Debra Chase of Brownhouse
Prods., and by Mario Iscovich, who is Marshall's producing partner.
Reluctant princess
Disney had made the deal last summer for Cabot's book after Houston and
Chase brought the project to the studio (Daily Variety, Aug. 10, 1999).
The book is the first of a multibook series for the young-adult audience
that will be published later this year by HarperCollins.
Buena Vista Motion Picture Group prexy Nina Jacobson is supervising "Diaires"
for the studio along with BVMPG veepee Karen Glass and production exec
Doug Short.
Hathaway is repped by the William Morris Agency and is managed by Suzan
Bymel at Talent Entertainment Group.
Marshall is repped by Creative Artists Agency.
