The Surprise Show: My Experience. submitted by: Trevor P. source: Trevor P. Date: Friday, February 12, 1999
I arrived at Schiphol International Airport, in Amsterdam, on Saturday (February 6 1999) at approximately 20.00 hrs and arrived in the centre of Amsterdam a little after 21.00 hrs. I immediately started my search for a (Heartbreak) hotel but was initially unsucessful as they were all fully booked. I eventuallly found one a little after midnight but moved to a more suitable one the following morning. On Sunday morning, February 7, I met Chantal K., Davey, Nicole and Lex at the Central Train Station in Amsterdam. We all returned to my hotel where we discussed Whitney and shared jokes. We all had a fine time. Some time later Davey, Nicole and Lex checked into a nearby (heartbreak) hotel while Chantal K. returned to a private accommodation which is situated in a nearby town. Klaus-Peter W. arrived in Amsterdam very late that night form Germany and also checked into a (heartbreak)hotel. We (approximately 12 Nippy fans) all met, at the Central Train Station, at about 18.00 hrs Monday morning and commenced our journey, by train, to the venue where the "Surprise Show" was to be taped. We arrived at the location after 9.00 hrs but to our surprise, we had to wait outside, in the cold snowy conditions, for over three hours. After receiveing the tickets from the officials at one section of the building we had to wait outside, at the entrance, for at least another hour. The Dutch organisers of the "Surprise Show" are to be deplored for the poor arrangements made to accommodate us, some of Whitney Houston's most ardent fans. Suddenly, the security guards began positioning themselves and Whitney's car drove quickly through the main entrance (with it's specially built door to accommodated these arrangements) of the building. Whitney showed her face very briefly waved and told us that we would see her later. More than half an hour elapsed when the front door was opened and we were welcomed inside by the some of the officials. We all entered the building quickly and immediately positioned ourselves at the best available places by the stage. Whitney appeared at the upper level of the stage then slowly but gracefully moved to the lower level where she was to perform. She was alternatively looking at the audience while watching her steps. She was always wearing this super charming smile that could melt even the toughest of hearts. If my memory serves me right, she wore a brownish striped, very trendy, pant-suit which had a velvety-covered collar. Nip was simply drop dead gorgeous. She looked slim elegant, radiant and appeared to have been in very good spirits. She started the song perfectly and got the crowd dancing feverishly to the song. She looked up to the right corner of the room and saw the screen showing her on stage. She smiled and raised her hands while moving her lower arms up and down to the beat. We had a great time as we jumped, screamed and danced throughout the song. Eventhough she did not sing one phrase, with a couple high notes, that well it was nonetheless a great performance. It was a great ocassion for me as Whitney was only about 4 to 5 metres from where I stood. I may be dreaming but I am pretty sure that Whitney could recognise my face, by now, if we were to pass each other on the street. We were that close and she actually looked at me a few times. Guess she knows a true Nippy fan when she sees one (smile). I was somewhat dissapointed though that she didn't meet the fans and that she sang only one song. Anyway, in light of the situation that she was reportedly threatened, I guess (even though it's not alright) its OK. After the show, we waited for Nippy's car to appear. When it appeared she waved briskly at us until she was out of sight. We then returned to our respective Heartbreak hotels. Most of us checked out the following day. I, however, checked out on Wednesday, February 10 1999, as I decided to stay in Amsterdam a couple more days.
Nippy is capable of healing the broken hearted
with her magical voice in song. She has certainly
blessed my heart, though admittedly, it was not
broken at the time.
