There is a possibility that the soundtrack to "The Preacher's Wife" may
end up the year at No. 2 on the Top Gospel Albums chart. Because "The
Preacher's Wife" did spend 26 big weeks at the summit and hasn't fallen
from No. 2 since then, it could end up at No. 1, instead of Kirk Franklin.

Elton John's tribute to Princess Di, "Candle In
The Wind '97" has broken Whitney's record for most 1 week sales for
singles. In 1992, "I Will Always Love You" sold over 632,000 copies
during the Christmas week. However, last week, "Candle" scanned in 3.4
million units. The single will undoubtedly debut at No. 1 when Billboard
releases the Hot 100 Singles chart for October 11, 1997 later on today.

Here are Billboard updates for the week ending August 2, 1997:
- Top R&B Albums: "The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack slips 15 notches
from No. 61 to No. 76 .
- Hot R&B Singles: "My Heart Is Calling" moves down 9 spots from
No. 53 to No. 62 .
- Hot R&B Single Sales: "My Heart Is Calling" slides 13 positions
from No. 44 to No. 57 .
-
Hot R&B Recurrent Airplay: "I Believe In You And Me" re-enters
the chart at No. 22 .
-
Top Gospel Albums: "The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack holds at
No. 2, after spending 26 big weeks at No. 1.
In fact, in this issue of Billboard, there is
a spotlight on Gospel music. In the
spotlight, there is a chart which compiles the
top Gospel albums to date; the chart period
runs from December 7, 1996 to July 5, 1997 .
"The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack is listed as
the *** No. 1 *** album, while Arista takes
top honors in the Gospel labels and Gospel
distributing labels categories. With an
R.I.A.A. certification of double platinum and
charting positions of only Nos. 1 & 2 (the
album debuted at No. 1, held the pole
position for 26 weeks, and has held at No. 2
since God's Property From Kirk Franklin's Nu
Nation's "God's Property" took over the No. 1
spot), it appears that the soundtrack will end
up at No. 1 for the year.
-
Hot 100 Singles Sales: "My Heart Is Calling" re-enters the chart
at No. 75 (although the single has slipped
off the Hot 100).
-
The Billboard 200: "The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack eases down 20
notches from No. 153 to No. 173 .
