Singer Bobby Brown Free Pending Appeal
date: Friday January 30 1:27 PM EST
from: Yahoo! News

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Reuters) - Singer Bobby Brown, the husband of R&B diva Whitney Houston, faces five days in jail and a year on probation under a drunken driving conviction.

A jury in Fort Lauderdale found Brown guilty Thursday of two misdemeanor counts -- driving under the influence and DUI/property damage -- in connection with a single-car accident in August 1996.

"It ain't justice," Brown shouted as he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. He was later released on $15,000 bond pending appeal.

Brown, 30, cradled his head in his hands and cried as the verdict was announced, and Houston, who attended the last day of the trial, also wept.

Brown's blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.22, nearly three times the state's legal limit, after he drove a black Porsche Carrera leased to his wife into a hedge and an address sign at a condominium tower, testimony showed.

A urine sample also found he had cocaine and marijuana in his system, according to medical reports.

Following the jury's verdict, Judge Leonard Feiner sentenced Brown Thursday to five days in jail and ordered him placed on probation for 12 months.

He also ordered Brown to pay a $500 fine, spend 30 days in a residential drug and alcohol treatment center, attend DUI school and perform 100 hours of community service and submit to random drug and alcohol testing.

If his sentence stands, Brown must to return to Florida to serve his five days in the Broward County Jail but can undergo rehabilitation treatment and perform community service at home in New Jersey, court officials said Friday.

In addition, Brown was ordered to produce, appear in and pay for a public service announcement about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, to be aired at least once on each of the four major television networks.

Brown suffered broken ribs and a broken foot in the crash.
