Funeral:
Whitney did not attend her father's funeral on Friday, choosing instead
to grieve in private. She attended her father's wake Thursday at the
Whigham Funeral Home in Newark with a police detail. Spokeswoman Nancy
Seltzer said, "Whitney spent the majority of the day with her father
yesterday, privately, in the viewing room of the funeral home. She attended
the wake ceremony later that night in the church. Today, she chose to
grieve privately." Seltzer explained Whitney wasn't just trying to avoid
paparazzi at the church. "The truth is it was very difficult, very emotional
and very powerful," she said. In spite of the lawsuit filed by her father's
company, "Whitney saw him before he died, and they were never estranged.
John and Whitney loved each other and always will."
John Houston, a World War II veteran, was buried at Fairview Cemetery
in Westfield, N.J., with full military honors. Whitney's mother Cissy
attended both the service and the burial. Cousin Dionne Warwick attended
the funeral. Aretha Franklin, a longtime family friend and Whitney's
godmother, sent a recording of "Amazing Grace," along with words of
praise for the "great father" John Houston had been. [From the New York

Birthday on hold: One of the most anticipated All-Star week events
--- Bobby Brown's birthday bash, to be co-hosted by his wife, Whitney
Houston, and scheduled for Thursday night at Club Fuel in Buckhead ---
is now on hold. Houston's father, John, died Sunday morning in a New
York hospital, and the couple is in New Jersey preparing for Friday's
funeral. The couple's representative, Debbie Ireland, told Buzz on Tuesday
that despite recent legal tensions between the father and daughter (John
had a lawsuit pending against Whitney), the two had reconciled prior
to his death. "Whitney was a daddy's girl, plain and simple," Ireland
said. "She knew other people were behind that lawsuit." Brown and Houston
are still enthusiastic about hosting a birthday party at Fuel and could
reschedule it as early as next week. And yes, the singers still plan
to open it up to the public. [From the Atlanta Journal and Constitution]
