Last night on New York's WB11 news, they interviewed Jane Magazine's Editor at large about Whitney's interview in her magazine. The editor explained that Whitney was about four hours late for the photo shoot due to an emergency dental visit as a result of a chipped tooth. The editor went on to say that lateness for interviews is a typical thing amongst stars and that Whitney's so-called "out of it" state was a result of the dental visit. (Thanks John G.)

If Jane Magazine had made it clear from the beginning that there was nothing unusual about Whitney's scheduling problem in the first place, and that such a delay is in fact typical, then a lot of innuendo would not have occurred yesterday in the rest of the press. If you want to give Jane Magazine a piece of your mind for causing so much trouble, e-mail them here and select the listing for "Rant" so your message is directed to the correct place. Just take care to be articulate and don't use foul language, otherwise they likely won't take your point of view seriously.

Last night, the syndicated show "Inside Edition" aired a story about Whitney, showing the place where she bought a bracelet that is mentioned in Jane Magazine. When asked about a comment from Whitney in the magazine, a person at the store said he had helped Whitney with her jewelry in the past and added that she is always a lady. He said he doesn't pay attention magazines, but what he actually sees with his own eyes. The show also added that Whitney's hairdresser confirmed that she had a dentist appointment, as mentioned in the magazine. Hopefully the record will be set straight. (Thanks Terrence)

From the Platinum Club: Amazingly, the press has pounced on Whitney's absence at this year's Oscar Awards. The truth of the matter is simply that Whitney Houston was unable to perform because of a sore throat. We all know that she has been busy working on new material for her upcoming Greatest Hits package; so, it's not impossible to think that she's been working her chords overtime as of late. As further affirmation, Jane LaBonte, the Oscar event publicist, attested, "I was in the rehearsal myself the whole time, and it was really obvious the poor lady was having a problem with her throat." It was a mutual decision made by Whitney Houston, Burt Bacharach - the producer of the musical sequence - and the producers of the show, that Whitney not perform that evening.
So, the Platinum Club would ask of Whitney's fans: don't believe the hype. Whitney is fine and recuperating from the spell, and is busily working to complete her recording sessions in order to release her Greatest Hits album on time.

On the Charts: The ILFTB single takes a tumble on the Hot 100 chart, making way for an eventual new single from the Greatest Hits. Read the complete statistics...

Here is a better copy of Whitney on the cover of the May issue of Jane Magazine, along with a beautiful black & white shot that apparently will be on the inside. (Thanks Ralph M.)

Unfortunately, the publishers of Jane have already publicized some of Whitney's quotes completely out of context to capitalize on the recent Oscar hoopla. The magazine should be out as early as next week to get a better perspective. If you would like to complain to the magazine about their publishing quotes out of context, you can e-mail them here. You should send your message to the listing for "Rant." Just remember to be polite and don't use foul language.

Sales and Music Chart Preview: Read the latest statistics on Whitney's MLIYL album and the ILFTB and MLIYL singles.

Sam Goody music stores have Whitney Houston pre-printed on their "New Releases" displays, with a May 9th release date. I asked a manager about this, who said that in most cases, Sam Goody will not list an artist on the pre-printed "New Releases" display unless they receive solid confirmation that the item in question is already complete and ready to ship. He said the reason is because over 2,000 of these displays are sent to all the stores in the U.S., and Sam Goody does not want to be responsible for misinformation reaching so many customers. Also, anything on the "New Releases" list can be reserved for a $2 deposit and set aside when it hits the stores. This would cause a real mess with refunds and such if the item was not confirmed to be released on a date already advertised by Sam Goody. (Thanks Patrick)

For anyone who plans to attend the fan meeting in Lindau, Germany this summer: For your information, here is the homepage of the family from whom two apartments have been rented.

More Oscars news: According to Entertainment Tonight, Whitney is now in New York. The show quoted Oscar music co-director Don Was, who said Whitney was suffering from a sore throat. "It was really pretty straight ahead. She wanted to, we wanted her to, and she had laryngitis and bronchitis." Singer Issac Hayes added, "She wasn't hitting any notes, but when you have laryngitis, you conserve, you save."
The show also quotes Whitney in the upcoming issue of Jane Magazine, in which she discusses the alleged Hawaii incident earlier this year. Whitney told the magazine: "It wasn't anything like it went down, that's all I can say." And speaking against the advice of her lawyers, she added, "You can't say anything, you can't do anything, because it incriminates you even more." When asked if she had ever spent time with a junkie, her answer was, "Sure." Whitney and her spokeperson deny drug use.

Here are additional articles about the Oscars...

CDNOW is offering Whitney's 4-LP unreleased remix set as an advance order for $21.99 . The site lists the expected release date as April 25th. (Thanks Alan M.)

I saw a Whitney release scheduled for May 25th called "The Unreleased Mixes" on Vinyl (4 LP set). The information comes from Germany. The catalogue-no. is: 7822146521 Arista USA (Thanks Norbert)

Whitney did not appear on today's Queen Latifah show. The show was taped on Saturday and Sunday, which as we all know was after Whitney was too ill. It featured all the other performers involved in the Oscar medley. (Thanks John G.)

The French release date for the ILFTB single has been pushed back to Friday or the beginning of next week. The ILFTB U.S. maxi single is available in the FNAC (largest music store in France). It's the first time I ever saw a Whitney U.S. maxi single in this store. They also have a different U.K. single with the same cover. There is one with Hex Hector's remix of "I Will Always Love You." I've seen the ILFTB video many times on the French TV music chanels, but I haven't heard it on the radio yet. (Thanks Julian S.)
2000/3/27
Whitney's cousin, Dionne Warwick, told Access Hollywood the following about why she did not perform at the Oscars: "Her throat was just gone, and doctor's orders not to open her mouth, not to do anything but hum very softly." Dionne added that Whitney was "very, very hoarse."

Entertainment Tonight reported that Whitney was scheduled to perform in the medley until Friday night, but decided to pull out because she had a sore throat. Whitney's spokesperson told ET that Whitney could not hit the high notes during Friday night's rehearsal. In addition, Garth Brooks said, "She came to rehearsal and tried real hard, but you could tell her voice was gone."

From Fox News Online: Scratched from performing on Sunday night's show was singer Whitney Houston, who was supposed to perform "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" as part of a medley with her cousin Dionne Warwick. Whitney was replaced at last minute by Faith Hill. Houston came to rehearsals on Saturday but wasn't up to snuff apparently. Her throat was said to be infected and she was taking some kind of medication that I suppose wasn't doing its job. Whitney is saving her voice for the April 10 taping of Arista Records' 25th anniversary TV special.

TV Reminder: There's no guarantee, but there is a small chance that maybe Whitney will appear on Queen Latifah's talk show tomorrow for a "Backstage at the Oscars" show. Whitney did attend rehearsals for at least one of the three days, so there's still a possibility that we might see a glimpse of her. You can set your VCRs just in case. Check your local listings.

The unreleased Greatest Hits remixes will be released on April 24th in Germany. (Thanks Dominik)

According to the Entertainment Weekly "A Star Is Born" poll, Whitney leads with 79.15%. She was ranked at No. 7 yesterday, so great job everyone! (Thanks Drew)
2000/3/26
Whitney did not perform at the Oscars tonight as planned, citing health problems. She was replaced by country singer Faith Hill, who sang portions of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and "The Way We Were." While I am sure we are all disappointed about her not being able to perform, the most important thing is her health. (Thanks Kosiso, Keith and Fernanda)

U.K. Chart News Update...

Here's an Entertainment Weekly poll where we can vote on which musician/actress should star in a fourth version of the movie "A Star Is Born." Whitney is on the list but her rank needs a significant boost. (Thanks Clemens)
2000/3/25
According to RockOnTV, Whitney will appear on Queen Latifah's talk show on March 28th for a "Behind the Scenes at the Oscars" show. As we know, Queen Latifah will be performing in an Oscar song medley tomorrow night with Whitney and other musical artists. The talk show airs in syndication, so double check your local listings. It airs at 9 a.m. EST. (Thanks Tony L.)

Whitney's Remix Box Set: Here is promotional material for the previously announced 4-vinyl box set. The promo outlines eight remixes that will reportedly be released on the set. The picture of the promo itself makes the set look quite attractive to collectors.

According to the New York Post, Whitney is expected to attend an Artisan Entertainment party co-hosted by Conde Nast tonight in Los Angeles.

I received an e-mail from Brazilian BMG that said Whitney's Greatest Hits will be available on May 14 in Brazil. The VHS will be released on the same day, but no DVD is mentioned. (Thanks Roberto)

Showtime re-aired the special "Black Entertainment 2000" last night, devoted to paying tribute to the talents and struggles of various black entertainers, mostly from earlier generations. Whitney narrated a segment on Dorothy Dandridge, and later there was a small segment on Whitney, narrated by Quincy Jones. If you've missed it, keep checking your local listings! (Thanks Ed S.)

To any fans planning to attend the Fan Convention in Lindau, Germany: If you haven't made plans with the convention organizers yet, please do so soon. The organizers want to ensure that they rent enough apartments in advance for everyone. So far, fans from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Holland have signed up.

Greatest Hits Update: Whitney's publicist, Lynn Volkman, said the print media information detailed in BMG's marketing materials is incorrect. Apparently, the information was a just a wish list even though the company used the word "confirmed" in the materials. As a result, Whitney is not scheduled to have cover stories for most of the publications, including Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Parade and InStyle. Apparently these "confirmed" announcements are standard practice for all record labels, even though it's not a word that is taken lightly in news. As for Whitney performing her CBS TV special on the grounds of her home, which was reported as fact by several news organizations this week, Volkman said it is being considered but it seems unlikely. The title of the Greatest Hits and its final artwork is being decided by Whitney at the moment, she said. (Thanks Manish)

Whitney's Duet: According to sources at BMG Germany, Whitney will record her duet with George Michael, which will function as the "leading PR track" for the Greatest Hits, the next week after the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. (Thanks Dominik) The duet news was also reported today by German TV station VIVA. (Thanks Michelle S.)

On the Charts: The ILFTB single slips on the Billboard Hot 100 and the sales chart. However, the single is still going strong in terms of actual units sold. It needs a great improvement in airplay, so let's keep requesting the song!

From the New York Daily News: New York is getting its own walk of fame. But instead of Hollywood stars, it's Madison Square Garden's stars. Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, Brian Leetch, Teresa Weatherspoon, Marv Albert, Walt Frazier, Rod Gilbert, Dave Checketts and James Dolan will all be on hand today to lay down their personal tiles in front of the Garden as part of the arena's charity program, "Solid Ground."
"Solid Ground" allows for celebs such as Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick, Whitney Houston, Billy Crystal and Billy and Alec Baldwin, along with any other Garden fan who wants to cough up either $350 or $5,000, to buy a tile on which to etch a personal memory of the Garden. The money benefits the Garden's "Cheering for Children Foundation."

In today's Los Angeles Times, comedian Bruce Vilanch, Academy Awards writer and a regular on "Hollywood Squares," gives his comedic take on some of the events surrounding this year's Oscars. Here's an excerpt:
Friday: The performers of the nominated songs--Aimee Mann, Phil Collins, Gloria Estefan with 'N Sync, Sarah MacLachlan with Randy Newman and Robin Williams--yes, that Robin Williams--arrive to rehearse their stuff, as do Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Queen Latifah and Garth Brooks--good God, it's sounding like the Grammy awards--to rehearse a special piece that Burt Bacharach has put together. At 8 p.m., a moment of silence will be observed for the interpretive dance rehearsal that might have been taking place at this hour. Everyone will then take off their tutus and get back to work.

For all fans in Germany: There is a CD-ROM in "Media Markt" -- a CD shop -- "MID-Music Info Disc" for just 6.95DM, about US$3, which contains current lists of all recording artists. All Whitney items that were ever released (including CDs, videos, DVD) are listed with date, tracklisting, composer, rec. no., release date, label information as well as free audio downloads to EVERY song ever released in the German market!
Also: TV Station PRO7 will live air the Oscars on Sunday night. (Thanks again Dominik)

Take a look at the 1989 French 7" single (A-side and B-side) for Whitney's duet with Aretha Franklin, "It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be." The cover is different than other record sleeves that were released. (Thank you Eddy VB)

NBC's "Today Show" is humming a new tune: The peacock is planning to launch a series of albums based on the program's popular summer music spots, reports the New York Daily News. "NBC would like to leverage the tremendous success of the 'Today Show' concert series," an NBC spokeswoman said. "We hope to have a deal with a record company in the near future." So far the "Today Show" has nabbed some big name artists to perform on its Rockefeller Center stage, including Grammy-King Carlos Santana, Whitney Houston, James Taylor, Jewel and Ricky Martin. (Thanks Tony L.)
Note: This news doesn't necessarily mean Whitney would be included in the CDs.

Here are six US Magazine covers on which Whitney has appeared:
  • August 11, 1986
  • January 12, 1987
  • October 5, 1987
  • January 24, 1991
  • September 1992
  • January 1997

According to the New York Post's Starr Report: TV Guide's J. Max Robins reports that "CBS will air a Whitney Houston concert in May from Houston's New Jersey mansion." No further details were given. (Thanks Nikki)

Here's a new picture from Whitney's Greatest Hits photo shoot from Arista's web site! You may recognize this small-scale photo compared to this picture we've already seen.

The Austrian magazine "Divas" features a report about Dolce & Gabbana and shows a picture of Whitney and the designers. There is also a comment below the picture that says: "This summer D&G worked for the most beautiful voice of all, Whitney Houston." (Thanks Clemens)

Note: The organizers of the Lindau, Germany Fan Convention have changed the dates for the meeting to July 30 - August 6th. The fan meeting had originally been scheduled for the following week.

Don Was appeared on CNN's "Showbiz Today" and during one clip they showed him in the studio listening to one of the songs that will be sung during the Academy Awards. The song was "Just My Imagination" with the vocals of none other than Whitney Houston. I guess this song was once nominated for an Academy Award. (Thank you Dee)

The Sound Of Change: Read the L.A. Times' report on music at this year's Oscars. The medley including Whitney will apparently run for about 12 minutes. Read the details...

According to columnist Liz Smith: DIONNE WARWICK will reprise a bit of her Oscar-winning Burt Bacharach/Hal David song "Alfie" at the Oscars this Sunday night. Warwick, who performed the song -- to stunning effect -- more than 30 years ago on Oscar night, is taking part in a retro medley of classic nominated tunes. Others warbling in this segment are Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, Garth Brooks, Ray Charles and Isaac Hayes. But that lineup might change as ABC juggles and edits this musical interlude.

I just had a conversation with a friend of mine who does research for the music world. I brought up Whitney's airplay stats concerning "I Learned From the Best." She said one reason why her stats are suffering is because not enough of her fans are calling in and requesting the single. She has a tremendous amount of support from the computer world and that is where it ends. She said this was also a fact with MTV Total Request Live. Whitney receives a lot of e-mail requests but falls way below 1% as far as calling in and requesting the video. (Thanks Miguel AG)

The Whitney Weekday Request Campaign has phone number request lines as well as e-mail addresses. Let's take 5 minutes to call some of those phone numbers to show our support for Whitney! Many of them are toll free!

Note to anyone who may have written a letter to the organizers of the upcoming Whitney Fan Convention in Lindau, Germany: One of the organizers, Nicole E., has moved. However, her e-mail address is unchanged.

New RealAudio: Listen to Whitney's performances of "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "Love Will Save The Day" at the 1987 Special Olympics! (Thank you Jonathon Ashley)
You can listen to audio files from Jonathon's new album at his site! He has been greatly influenced by Whitney!

    U.K. Chart News Update...

This weekend, MTV Europe aired the R&B Top 100. Whitney ranked at No. 15 with "I Will Always Love You" and Bobby at No. 16 with "My Prerogative." I don't understand why Whitney is not in the Top 5. It's also beyond me why there is only one Whitney song on this chart. (Thanks Eddy VB)
    2000/3/18
World Chart Show Update for "I Learned From The Best"

Whitney will be on German TV twice next month. On April 2nd Pro7 will air "The Bodyguard" at 8:15 p.m. and on April 5th it will air "Waiting To Exhale" at 8:18 p.m. (Thanks Michaela)
    2000/3/17
Oscar News From MTV Online: Whitney Houston and Queen Latifah have joined Garth Brooks, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Isaac Hayes and Ray Charles as performers for the 72nd Annual Academy Awards, being presented on March 26. As part of the show, the pop-country-soul ensemble will sing a medley of tunes that have been nominated for Oscars over the last 70 years, as well as the songs that are competing for this year's award for Best Original Song.
According to "Variety," Bacharach and the event's musical director, Don Was, have already selected the songs that the group will perform, including "Alfie,'' which Warwick and Bacharach first performed at the Academy Awards back in 1967. Bacharach and Was will also play in the backing band for the musical program, with Bacharach leading the group from his piano stool while Was mans the bass. Veteran session musicians will fill out the rest of the band.
To catch Whitney and Queen Latifah's Oscar performance, be sure to tune into the telecast of the 2000 Academy Awards, airing live on ABC on March 26 at 8:30 p.m. (ET).

This morning on NBC's Later Today program, Charlotte Church, the 14 year-old opera singer, was interviewed and said that when she was younger her voice was much like Whitney Houston's but nobody can be better than Whitney and the hostess agreed. Charlotte herself is a big fan of Whitney having mentioned it on MTV's TRL sometime ago.
Also yesterday on VH1's new program, The Daily One, Mary J. Blige was on and the hostess mentioned that she was on the Divas Live/99 program last year and she was hand-picked by Whitney to sing with her. When asked how she felt, Mary said that it was an honor to sing with Whitney and any young girl would love to have a chance to sing with Whitney.
Finally, on a past episode of ABC's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, one of the questions was: Who wrote the song IWALY from the movie "The Bodyguard," sung by Whitney Houston? The answer was Dolly Parton as we all know, and the contestant answered correctly and won $64,000.00 . (Thanks Carolyn)
    2000/3/16
On the Charts: The ILFTB single moves up one notch on the Hot 100 chart and earns a bullet. As we know, the song had a minor sales decrease this week, which indicates that the bullet is likely due to an increase in airplay. However, the increase apparently was not enough to enable the song to enter the Hot 100 Airplay chart. R&B Airplay remains steady this week. Read the full statistics...

ILFTB's sales remain strong, but if this song is going to climb higher, we have to request it like mad!

Queen Latifah was on the Rosie O'Donnell Show today and she said Whitney, Ray Charles, Garth Brooks and herself will perform a medley of previously nominated songs at the Oscars. (Thanks Marg)

Access Hollywood reported tonight that Whitney, Garth Brooks and Ray Charles will perform the Oscar medley while accompanied on piano by Burt Bacharach. Since Ray Charles is never too far from a piano, this doesn't necessarily mean that Bacharach will be performing with everyone. Keep in mind that there are still many details missing about the performances at this point.

Whitney is featured in the March 20th issue of Jet Magazine. In a fashion article, Jet says the following about Whitney: Superstar singer-actress Whitney Houston is a snazzy dresser. One minute she's seen in an elegant form-fitting gown and the next she's seen chilling in a sassy casual outfit. When the Grammy Award-winning singer recently hit the road for her Your Love, Is My Love Tour, she went all out with several costume changes during concert performances. From one funky Dolce & Gabanna creation to the next, Houston never missed a beat.
Here is a picture of Whitney that accompanies the Jet article.
