Living Up To Expectations....at least Whitney is!!!!!
Posted by Larry on October 23, 1998:
I have reviewed numerous reports today and two particular reports stood out. Basically they were talking about how Whitney can't send the chills down the spine like she used to and he feels sorry for her when she sings now. This is only my opinion but I think that a voice is like a fine wine....it improves with age....and Whitney's has certainly done that. When Whitney was a high soprano I felt the songs, but now that she is a mid-soprano/high alto, I think her voice has more definition. Whitney can still belt it out better now than before. Miracle was the perfect song to prove that her voice is better now then back in the 80's. Don't get me wrong she had some very heartfelt songs in the eightys but they did not have the definition she can lay on a song now. When You Believe is evidence that her voice is not fading but is improving. I had to listen to it 3 times but it has grown on me. Whitney has in the beginning a sweet, sou,l gospel, spine tingling, and spectacular rendition of how she can turn from a soprano to an alto. During the chorus, Whitney belts it out with unbridal joy and brings us back to the "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" days. As for Mariah.......she has a bueatiful voice but its so airy and has no foundation to stand on when she sings alongside Whitney. Mariah trys her hardest to keep the harmony right between her and Whitney, but I think that she tried just a little too hard. Though Mariah takes the higher key i fell that she could have sung that key WITH Mariah but she just wanted to let Mariah have her moment just as Whitney had her moment with her mother in "I Know Him So Well". Whitney's voice is holding up to the test of time and Mariah's voice is holding up with a delicate twig.....one break and you're out of there. So all of those who think that Whitney has lost the flare and is struggling to hold the candle, think again because her voice is a GOD given gift and he gave her a he_l of a gift let me tell you. Its a very soulful ballad that brings me back, as a full fledged Whitney fan, to "Didn't We Almost Have it All", and sort of a weak, dying "Hero", for Mariah Carey.
