A Boy and His Wolf

Posted by Art on November 17, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
It grew on me, but it's not a favourite.

Heartbreak Hotel:
It's one of my faves. Smooth, soulful...can listen to it again and again.

My Love Is Your Love:
Very regga-ish. A great straighforward love song (most of the album's songs aren't just about true love).

When You Believe:
Whitney's sings clear and with more feeling, Mariah is less emotional, more technical, with willowy high notes. Whitney doesn't sing the long high notes anymore, so Mariah does it, but in a soft way.

If I Told You That:
Cool, funky.

In My Business:
I think the lyrics and production are good. It's not catchy, though.

I Learned From The Best:
It's a better ballad from all involved, some of the production bothered me. It does have a hook.

Oh Yes:
Lyrics average. Not a standout. Cool production.

Get It Back:
A grower.

Until You Come Back:
Another grower. And then it is impressive.

I Bow Out:
Good, nothing too different.

You'll Never Stand Alone:
Very cliched, inspirational ballad. Good for what it is.

I Was Made To Love Him:
It's passionate, fast, interesting. Very Lauryn Hill, which is cool.

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
I think Whitney's voice is still clear, smooth, and interesting to listen to. The fact that she can't belt out like she used to is good because it stops her from "oversinging", like she used to. Now she sort of grooves more slowly, instead of shouting a song, which is why her voice has changed. She had to shout those ballads. I cannot listen to "Didn't We Almost Have it All" anymore. She shouts, plus that song is cheesy as hell .There were times on this new album that I wished there was a sultry torch song like "You Give Good Love". A love/pop song as well. But the whole thing as a Whitney album is a step up. This is a great album, some ordinary lyrics and less hooks, but stylistically an achievement for Whitney.
