Different, but good!

Posted by Jam on December 30, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
This is a great song IMO. Love the intro. When I listen to this song, I can just imagine Nip in the studio jammin to this one.

Heartbreak Hotel:
It was okay, although Whitney's songs generally have more depth. Liked it better live at the Billboard's.

My Love Is Your Love:
This song is deep!! It's a different style for Whitney, but this song has a whole lot of meaning. Wyclef is one heck of a songwriter.

When You Believe:
I like. Although Whitney did sound better in this song, I do believe Mariah held her own this time. This song was not as powerful as I expected. I think they both could have done better. I believe they both kinda held back out of respect for each other.

If I Told You That:
Has a nice beat, but this song DOES sound like "The Boy Is Mine." I think the bridge could have been better. I just love the occasional "ugh" noise that Whitney effortlessly makes. Adds more depth.

In My Business:
I actually like this song, although I was a bit skeptical about Whitney and Missy working together. Whitney's telling them like it is.

I Learned From The Best:
Best song on the album. Powerful, dramatic. . .a trademark Whitney song. But I think she struggled with that last "You" note. JMHO.

Oh Yes:
Sultry, sensuous. This song makes me wish I was in Bobby's shoes. Enough said.

Get It Back:
My "skip" button really got a work-out on this one.

Until You Come Back:
Love it. Whitney could have sung this on her second album, although I think she's screaming a bit with the "Arms" note.

I Bow Out:
I loved the comparison between real life and art. Very clever.

You'll Never Stand Alone:
I'm probably in the minority her, but I really can't get into this song despite its message. Sounds a lot like "You Were Loved." I guess once you hear one Dianne Warren song, you've heard 'em all.

I Was Made To Love Him:
Loved it, although it seemed a bit muffled. I can tell Whitney enjoyed singing this one.

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
What can I say? I really like the album, but I would be lying to say that it is her best work to date. Honestly, Whitney's voice is not what it used to be. AND I DON'T BLAME IT ON SMOKING. People need to realize that Whitney now has acting, producing, being a mother, and keeping Bobby out of trouble to deal with now. She's not just a singer like she was the 80s. She's has many other things to concentrate on, which is why she's probably not dedicating as much time and energy into her singing as we would like.
To be honest, songs like "How Will I Know," "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "Didn't We Almost Have It All," and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," were lame and lacked the soul that's present on MLIYL, but they sounded good, perfect. Call me nostalgic, but I miss those days of in-your-face love ballads and dance hits. Whitney's voice was resilient, clear, and she made every note count, leaving you begging for more. But even now, her voice is still better than all the rest, which goes to show how dominating she was back then. I love Whitney and I still do. Although I'm willing to accept the change, NOTHING and NO ONE can compare to the way her voice used to be.
