Thumbs up...

Posted by Foo on December 23, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
It's different and she proves that she can carry the song. 3.5/5

Heartbreak Hotel:
R&B, the real one. Whitney is back to her root. Three girls blend extremely well. (If comparing to WYB) 3.5/5

My Love Is Your Love:
Show case of the album and I truely hope this makes its way to Grammy. For the first time, I was touched. No way that people can still blame Whitney for just a voice. 5/5

When You Believe:
Well, it's a good one, but does not go with the album's concept. It does not sound right for them, the way of interpret this song. R&B a musical?? Anyway, they both did well. And I think Whitney is much more in control of her own voice. 2.5/5

If I Told You That:
It's funny listening to this song. Suddenly she is so young. 3/5

In My Business:
Very catchy. The only thing is that it will turn those who expect Classic Whitney off. Sometimes, it feels like a Janet's song. 3/5

I Learned From The Best:
Pure Whitney, and more on the lower range. (And I can't get into that key!) At first, I thought it was about Whitney learnt all the good from the best and greatest, such as her mom, Aretha... Wow, it's actually learning the reality of life from... the best or worst? If it's real, I pity her. That's why I can feel this song. Still wonder why the song ends like that?? A necessary or showing off? 3.5/5

Oh Yes:
When I first heard it, I skipped. It's nothing like Whitney, and kept asking where's Whitney? Cause all I cared was her voice. Totally missed out the song. That's what you expect from the great voice. Later, I realized how fluent the song is... and I am flowing with it ever since. 4/5

Get It Back:
As "If I Told You That", you will start wondering how old Whitney is. 2.5/5

Until You Come Back:
Strange, I really enjoy the voice. The song itself is average, but the voice make it all up. That is the bad thing for Whitney. People just throws any material to her, as her voice will save the world. Anyway, we still please that we have Whitney, don't we? 4/5

I Bow Out:
Good, above average, but it won't strike you. 3/5

You'll Never Stand Alone:
Perfect for Whitney material. And she can carry you through it all. And really sound like she can protect you. 4.5/5

I Was Made To Love Him:
One of the best of the album. raw, loose, pure, simple. I was made to love Whitney. 5/5

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
One of the best album around currently.
While everyone is doing their own and only style (Celine Dion bangs on the ballads, Braxton on her sexy R&B, Monica/Brandy being Monica/Brandy, Mariah being Mariah...), Whitney is trying so hard to make it scross the lines. Will her voice be enough for all? Yes, it is. Will we all with her? Well, i am. As an artist, you have to it all. Good for you Whitney.
We can't stop people comparing the two divas. Put it this way, there must be competition in all kind of business. I still keep my vote for Whitney though.
