Queen of the Night

Posted by Theodore Logan Esq. on December 15, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
I didn't like it at first but now I love the story it tells.

Heartbreak Hotel:
This is a great song, full of emotion, esp. when all three groove together.

My Love Is Your Love:
This is a perfect holiday song. Whitney sounds like she's at church. Wonderful- loved her performance of it on Letterman- it was perfect.

When You Believe:
The weakest part of this song is the music, it makes me kinda embarassed to listen to it. But I love both divas and I love hearing both their styles. They are both awesome.

If I Told You That:
This is a fun, light song.

In My Business:
I like the scratch, the lyrics, the production. It reveals Whitney's point of view, its great strength.

I Learned From The Best:
This is a slinky, loungey kinda song. I like it.

Oh Yes:
I wasn't impressed at first but this grew on me the most. A sexy love song.

Get It Back:
This song's cool.

Until You Come Back:
The first line sounds too much like "I left my heart in San Francisco..." Other than that, this song reminds me of Whitney in a jazz club.

I Bow Out:
This is on par with "Get it Back" .

You'll Never Stand Alone:
I think this is Whitney's best vocal performance on the album, even though I have to be in the mood to listen to such a sentimental song. This has potential to be a great big hit single.

I Was Made To Love Him:
This sounds like a certain track on Lauryn Hill's album, It is a very defining song for Whitney in many ways.

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
Whitney here shows that she really is "The Queen of the Night". I love the dark edge to some of her songs now, and also her traditional stuff. I wasn't sure how I felt about this album until I found myself always listening to it. I have been Whitney's fan from the beginning and this is up there with her first album. I didn't like "Whitney", and "I'm Your Baby Tonight" was okay. This album proves Whitney's depth and style and shows why she is such a star. My main point of criticism is that her voice sounds dry and cracked at times, as if she was in a hurry to lay down the vocals.
