CHANGE IS GOOD!

Posted by Leigh on December 03, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
Whitney can deliver a vocal as young and as fresh as today's youthful contemporaries such as Aailyah, Monica, and/or Brandy. Instant across the board #1 hit.

Heartbreak Hotel:
This took a while to grow on me. Being a lover of Faith and Kelly's voices, I'm quite partial to this song. Their voices are so raw and natural. Neither singer is trying to outsing each other. Incredibly soulful!

My Love Is Your Love:
Lord, my Lord! This song brought me to tears. Rachel: Guess we got our Wyclef track! This track is so beautiful lyrically and melodically. Its the only song on the CD that I'm constantly humming. This is another across the board smash #1 hit. Expect this to saturate the airwaves. Hopefully we'll hear Buju Banton on the remix versions. One can only hope!

When You Believe:
Nice! But that's about it! This version holds back Whitney's vocals to much and Mariah's all over the place. The melody is pretty but I think the song would be even prettier if there were a 20 second interlude with the orchestra alone.

If I Told You That:
"The Boy Is Mine" 2. I swear I started singing Brandy & Monica and the vocals fit exactly. Rodney could have gotten a little original with this one. Just seems like he's capitalizing on the success of The Boy Is Mine. However, it is a jumpin' dance track provided there are various dance remixes.

In My Business:
Dang! Missy really captured Whitney's rawness! However, the track is sounds like the vocals were cut and pasted. Good try but I hope Arista doesn't consider this for a potential single. Missy's sound is growing tiresome.

I Learned From The Best:
It took me two listens to enjoy this one. Once again, David could have been a little more original. It sounds like the remix of IBIYAM and Brandy's "Have You Ever" and Monica's "Inside". It is beautifully sung. Whitney delivers the vocals with incredible sincerity and clarity. This will definitely be a #1 hit.

Oh Yes:
OH YES! This is definitely classic Whitney all the way! Finally someone has captured Whitney's live performance and passion on to a CD track. It sounds like she's sang this completely through. It's so totally raw and sexy. This is a definite slow jam. Expect R&B radio to kill this song. Mary J. Blige eat your heart out!

Get It Back:
I refused to believe that this was Whitney. Lord, can she blow and cut a vocal. These vocals are precise, playful, streetful yet soulful. Whitney sounds like she really enjoyed the meaning of this song. When she sings "...nothing would change for you & me...". That gut wrenching effect swept completely off my feet. In addition to that, the track is slammin', Arista had better release this track as well.

Until You Come Back:
This is the BEST track on the CD. This is vintage Whitney Houston like no one else can do. The melody is gorgeous the sincerity and passion in Whitney's voice is incredible. What's impressive is that she's not concerned with always singing the note perfectly but in projecting a particular emotion through the song when she sings "..I won't stop at nothing.... Another definite No.1 hit.

I Bow Out:
Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! This song made me cry literally. Something about fast tracks with a pretty melody and strings that get me. The strings are just beautiful. Whitney sings this completely from the heart. Another potential No.1.

You'll Never Stand Alone:
Again, this brought me to tears. This is again a classic and vintage Whitney song. She proves that no one can match her delivery of a vocal in a song. Babyface must be so proud of this track as well as the previous Until You Come Back.

I Was Made To Love Him:
Jammin! Jammin! Party song all the way!` She sounds so much like Stevie on this track. Now I can recognize in Whitney's voice when she says she tries to emulate Stevie's sounds. Most definitely Stevie's presence is in this song. Lauryn's vocals are incredible as well.

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
This is a great CD.
Whitney has really outdone herself this time. Inital sales isn't going to mean a thing. This CD is going to be her biggest yet. I can really sense it. The songs are so strong and there are so many potential No.1 that cross so many musical genres and demographics. The next single will put Whitney back on top. The producers really know how to capture the essence of Whitney at this point.
What most impresses me about this album is that it proves that Whitney Houston is first and foremost a SOUL singer who happened to sing popular music at the beginning of her career, but has now found her niche in R&B/Soul music. I hope the public starts acknowledging her as s soul singer from this point onward.
