New Kinda Magic!

Posted by Chuck Walker on December 03, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
Great Hit. Clever lyrics. Hard-hitting message!! My fourth favourite song on the album.

Heartbreak Hotel:
Very likeable song. Whitney definitely has the best vocal ability out of Kelly and Faith but they all gel well together.

My Love Is Your Love:
At first I hated this song. It was just such a massive departure from anything Whitney's done before, but after approx a week, I can't get enough of it.

When You Believe:
This was the first song I listen to on the album from beginning to end. I love it however, given that Whitney and Mariah are my two favourite singers I'm well aware of what they're capable of, and I don't feel they both gave it 100%. The song also seems a little short. All through hearing it I was waiting for the climax but in a way it never came. I didn't want a battle of the divas, but I wanted something more earth-shattering. I still love this song though. My fifth favourite track on the album.

If I Told You That:
My little sisters said the moment they heard this that it sounded like Brandy and Monica's song the boy is mine. Whitney gives it a distinctive style of her own, but in a sense I still feel it's a little tame.

In My Business:
This song's got alot of attitude. I do like it. Though I've never really been a fan of Missy, mostly because I haven't spent much time listening to her stuff, I felt it would have made more sense for her to have sung/rapped some more than she did. Enjoyable song nonetheless.

I Learned From The Best:
*****The Best Song On The Album***** This song is a masterpiece. Everyday when I come home from work it's the first song I listen to, and just before I go to bed I treat myself and indulge. Absolutely fantastic. Glorious. It really shows what Whitney can do with a song. Great vocals.

Oh Yes:
Corr blimey. You can tell that I'm British. I love this song. It's so romantic, deep and sensual. I get lost in the seductive throes of this song. Probably my second favourite song.

Get It Back:
This song is da bomb. Something about it really makes me get up and start dancing in my bedroom. After you get about 75% of the way through this song, just after Whitney sings "show me, show me, show me" something incredible happens with the beat/drums playing in the background. They become more pronounced, there's more bass, and more earth-shaking tones. It's, in my opinion the primary dance track on the album. My third favourite track.

Until You Come Back:
Haven't really listened to it yet. Would be unfair to comment.

I Bow Out:
I do like this song. Though it took me a while to get into it.

You'll Never Stand Alone:
Haven't listened to it yet, so would be unfair to comment.

I Was Made To Love Him:
Haven't yet gotten into the swing quite yet. But it's a very rootsy song, down-to-earth. Definitely a new direction for Whitney.

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
When I first listened to the album, I didn't like it. My expectations were on a completely different track. I was still stuck in the "I wanna dance with somebody", "I will always love you" phase, so I fell into a brief depression for one night after hearing this. Then the next day I listened again, and since then I don't think I've listened to any of my other albums since.

Whitney has taken a brave step in the right direction with this new sound. I hope it sells as well as her previous studio albums have done, because this is for a more specialised audience. But I'll say this....Whitney has always been my favourite singer, she is right now and she'll always be because she stands head and shoulder above any other singer out there.
