Brava Diva!!!

Posted by Devin McCoy on November 30, 1998:

It's Not Right, But It's Okay:
Initially, I didn't like the beginning...there seemed to be little transition between the first verse and the chorus. Now I love the words..pricless lyric. "...I can pay my rent..take care of my babies..." Bitchy song, love it.

Heartbreak Hotel:
Lots of uncertainty here...I like it, but I don't love it.

My Love Is Your Love:
The more I hear it, the more I love it...the lyrics are awesome! Wyclef is truly amazing to come up with that song in a day...very deep and introspective...Ms. Houston sings it as if she means every word. Priceless lyric,"..it would take an Eternity to break us up, and the chains of Armistad couldn't hold us..."got goosebumps. Definatly one of the best songs on the CD.

When You Believe:
Truly a beautiful song...very inspirational...WH and MC did great jobs, however, I thought WH sang as if she knew the struggle faith sometimes can bring, MC sounded like she was singing a painful love song...WH should have ended the song by herself....

If I Told You That:
Catchy car tune...she sings with abandon...love the adlibs...reminds me of "How Will I Know."

In My Business:
Very, very different for WH...took me a while to get used to it...actually took me a while to get used to Missy Elliott cursing.."why are they all up in my bitness"...loved that!

I Learned From The Best:
Sat down and cried when I heard this...WH sings from experience and the words are immaculate. Diane Warren really is in touch with the human psyche and human suffering...WH sings like she sings live on this one, no holds barred and with all she has. And the ending (the last note) is just...hell, what can I say...she knows how to end a song! David Foster really did it here...he seems to pull the best out of her and capture all the technical perfection without diluting the feeling in her voice that just cannot be denied.

Oh Yes:
Loved it from the start! Very sexy, lovemaking music...WH sounds oh so sensual. The hook is to die for..."You are so amazing, unbelievable baby, it's you that makes me smile, when everything is crazy...you're in my heart, I'm in your heart..." Oh Yes, to "Oh Yes"

Get It Back:
Cute, I like the chorus...WH really sings on the fast tracks...sounds like she's having fun.

Until You Come Back:
Drama! And no one can project drama in a song like WH! Another one that sounds live...cannot wait to see her do this one live...she's gonna kill them! She sings with true conviction and I can visualize her with her arms stretche out and shaking her head. Very "Bodyguard" sounding! Second favorite song on the CD. Priceless lyric.." I won't stop at nuthin', I won't give you up and you gotta feel sumthin'I know....I will not love again..." I felt as if I was at a live performance...kept wanting to scream "Sing, girl!"

I Bow Out:
Babyface magic!

You'll Never Stand Alone:
Third favorite! Started crying...knew it was for Bobbi Kris the first time I heard it, like I knew ILFTB was for B. Brown. Sings with her heart...WH is outstanding...truly following her mom's advice, "Sing with feeling, sing it from your heart and give it all you got, and that's the kind of singer people will live to see"

I Was Made To Love Him:
Favorite fast jam. L. Hill really is untouchable! She pulls the best out of WH voice...this reminded me of WH from the debut album...sings with zest and wild abandon. Loved it from the start...with L-Boogie had time to produce more tracks on the CD.

Overall impressions on MLIYL:
Ms. Houston sounds incredible and extremely strong. A noticable difference from "Waiting to Exhale" and "Preacher's Wife" Her voice is deeper now and I am glad she's chosen material to showcase those pipes...certainly has all the magic she had before seasoned with lifes experiences...singing like she knows exactly what she's talking about! Her voice hasn't changed, just the music. I applaude her for taking a risk and branching out to something a bit different. She's a gem and when she sings, I believe we truly are hearing the Eighth Wonder of the World!
