Overall impressions on MLIYL:
I bought this new album without having heard any of the tracks. I must admit that when I first listened through the album, I was reluctant with my appreciation because hip-hop style is really un-Whitney Houston in that it's not her traditional genre. I'm not used to hearing Whitney as a hip-hoppin' bad mamma-jamma; I expect that from Mary J. and love her for it, but Whitney? From her I expect all finesse and fine production; generically sentimental lyrics; you know, that smooth edge that she sings about. But this album is not that, nor is it intended to be. Core fans will recognize some of that familiar balladry, but "My Love Is Your Love" is much less predictable than her previous efforts, and I'm glad that it is. Truthfully, I probably would have been reluctant to appreciate any new album that Whitney might have sang. I'm so used to her musical greatness that I expect each new effort to be ever-greater. That expectation is unrealistic because this woman can already sing so well-- really now, can she sing much better? I'm not disappointed with this new effort. The album is good. But it's not traditional Savin-All-My-Loving; I-Wanna-Dancin; I-Will-Always-Lovin; Believin-In-You-and-Me Whitney. And you know what folks? I'm glad it's not the same ole Whitney; kudos to the new!
