I Can Hang with the Babies!!!

Which Concert: Saturday, Nov. 14/98
Posted by lopez on November 15, 1998:

I roomed with 3 other Whitney fan (Rachel). We met up with approx 16-18 fans from all over the country and had a listening and eating party at the All Star Cafe in the Trump Taj Mahal from 5-7:20pm. I only heard a few of the tracks as we were talking and eating at the same time.
I got in thearea hall approx 7:40pm, I snuck my camera in so I will have pictures later. It was a sold out concert unlike Friday's. People were still be seated at 8:20pm, impatient crowd started to clap and stomp their feet for Whitney. the lights went out and she immediately came on the stage on a rising dais from underground. She had on a black, 2-piece tunic pants suit in stilleto black ankle boots. She was sporting the blond wig. She looked great. She opened with: I'm Every Woman, then Saving all My Love, Queen of the Night, I wanna Dance with Some One, Diana Ross Medley-duet with her brother Gary-Endless Love, Ain't no Mountain High Enough, and Who's the boss. At this point something was going on to the far left of the stage. She put her hands to her eyes as she strained to see what was going on. She basically said'what's going on, someone can't see cause you're standing up, don't get iggle now,:. then ste told the security not to take him out but to bring him up front. She told him to calm down, enjoy the show, be good cause he was sitting with her family. She said just relax, you see there is a solution to every problem. The audinece applauded for her being so nice. She sang My Love is Your Love and had Bobbi Kris say 'mommy' and some other words tos tart the song-her brother Michael was holding BK with the mike to the right side of the stage. Whitney was overcome and told the band to start again-she said that it is something about hearing your baby say mommy. She ten went into a stirring rendition of MLIYL. The openning lines to this song is amazing "If i'm standing on the front line on judgement day and I'm asked what did I do with my life, I'll say I spent it with You..." She was looking at BK. Luther Vandross was the surprise guest and she called him up to the front of the stage and referred to him as her dear friend. Mr. LV did not know the words to MLIYL but Whitney whispered the chorus in his ear and he adlibbed a little. She then called on stage her new group 'Sunday". They are 4 girls, she let them sing freestyle to theline MLIYL. Those girls can BLOW. She then changed and her her brother Gary sing 'Sack of Dreams'.
During the beginning she talked about recording her new album in 6 weeks with some of today's best and finest producers/artist. She then listed their names. She said "I can hang with the babies" She said that they are saying that this is her first album in 8 yrs, she then said I don't know where they were because I did 3 soundtracks in those 8 years. She also talked about the movies she did. She was in good spirits, funny, cracking jokes, energetic and mobile. At one point she said that she would be back as she had to change, she ran to the top of the steps on stage, paused, turned around and came back down-she said "so how do you like my new dress'. She was funny. She worked both parts of the stage, she even urged the audinece to get jiggy with it and to have fun and join the party. she said the casino is going to take your money anyway, and you paid for the concert so why not have fun. After, Gary sang, she came out in a KILLER gown. It was sleeveless, v-neck, black with a gold metal drop waist belt, and a high, side split with clear slingback high heel slippers. She sang I Learned from the Best in a chair and said she had to look at the teleprompter cause she didn't know the words, however, when she started to sing she remembered. She tore this song up. She did an Exhale..Shoop break down. This was good, then she introduced the band. Thitney, then sang I Love the Lord. She brought down the house with this one. She was hoarse and begged the audience forgiveness at the start of the show. She said that she couldn't sing with the Ac/had recorded 13songs in 6wks. and that the draft would hit her throat. She said that she would hive us her best and that she would only ask that we love her back by allowing her to turn of the AC. After the first 4 songs, her voice warmed up and she was amazing. She sang in her mid-range power vocal for about 80% of the material. She kicked B*** with ILTL and brought the house down. She said that she work up that morning without a voice and asked God to bless her and he did because she got her voice back. In all honest, this song was so moving, it brought tears to my eyes and several people around me. I had the shivers at her amazing performance of this song. She ad libbed at the end and she said several times "Don't let me get loose in heare". People responded by shouting, "It's o.k Whitney, Get loose, We love you, sing, go head, etc". At the end of this at least 6 mins. performance she thanked the audience for allowing her to share that with them. she sang a total of 13 or 14 songs, I don't remember them all. however, she closed with IWALY. I don't know how she pulled this off, because it is such a difficult song to sing. she nailed it. She rearranged it a bit differently but she sang with her chest voice/mid range. It was killer. When she announced take care of yourselves and IWALY, people were screaming no, more etc. She eveloped BK in her arms and stood on the dais and it disappeared under the stage. People crammed to the front of the stage and were shouting Whitney, Whitney, more, more and clapping. The light came back on and the band members took their positions again. She came out in a purple 3 piece pants set like the one she wore on the Sough African tour. She ripped Step by Step for the encore. People were standing on the chairs including myself. When she got to the lyrics with the words baby in it, she held up a baby that was handed to her and said'this is my nephew.' Huge, colorful balloons fell out the sky, then confetti. Young and old were dancing. It was disappointing to leave as we all wanted to hear more of Whitney. She concert was approx 1hr and 40 mins. The background singers carried her high notes in the first 3-4 songs. She did not attempt to hide it. But from the Diana medley on, she sang them albeit in her mid range which was pure power booming at you. The sound system was incredible. p.s. Bobby was not there
excuse my typing, I'm tired.
