Whitney at full blast !Concert date: 11/2/99 Anvers, Belgique
Review of the show: The first show on september 25th was very good, so I had some reservations about the eventual outcome of the second. There was however no need to make any reservations. Whitney was again at full blast ! She's undoubtedly the best live performer I have ever seen. Nobody is in her league. Nippy sang even better and the response of the audience was tremendous. Whitney was obviously in shipshape. There'were no signs of any illness (a cold, flu). Whitney is really a stunning woman. She never looked better. I have managed to obtain a place very close to the stage (2nd row), so I had again a very good view on Whitney. The opening act, the Canadian singer Amanda Marshall, as usual on this European tour, was very good (especially the song "Believe in you"). Amanda promoted a couple of songs from her second album "Tuesday's child". She sang from 7:50 to 8:20 P.M. Whitney performed from 9:00 to 10:50 P.M. When Whitney entered the stage the audience went wild. There was electricity in the air. Whitney appreciated the lovely reception very much and she showed her gratitude later... Whitney wore some new tasteful outfits from Dolce and Gabbana (different from the previous time I saw her, but very beautiful, the embroidery twinkled in the light). I also noticed some very expensive ring-fingers. She was in a very good spirit, sang very well and was extremely friendly to the fans.
Whitney and her dancers Carolyn, Merylin, Joyce and Kyndra - 4 nice-looking and talented women - were very energetic and sympathetic. The choreography was excellent. Set list (to the best of my recollection because every time I see Whitney in person I get "so emotional") :
- Get it back (great entry) - Heartbreak hotel (an unbelievable ending) - If I told you that (nice, loved it) Whitney thanked the audience for coming. She said "Welkom" in Dutch. Whitney was happy to be back in "Antwerp" (she pronounced it with a very nice accent, Whitney has a lovely, irresistable laugh). She said that the current tour is coming to an end (4 shows to go and 2 award shows). Whitney noticed some banners (with support for the MTV awards and acknowdlegded). Whitney said that she and her crew loves to perform. She honestly confessed that she get homesick after while on tour (obviously she misses her daughter), although she can always count on her brother Gary. - Saving all my love for you ("back to 1985, great version, with some voice-gymnastics) - Until you come back to me (lovely tune) - I learned from the best (my personal favourite Whitney song of the moment,a potential n° 1, a superb live version very convincing) - Step by step (very good choreography, a lot of participation of the audience) Whitney leaves the stage (changing of clothes). - I I could change the world (sung by Gary Houston, nice song, he has a good voice)
- Instrumental (Whitney and group on video) . I'm your baby tonight/ . Run to you . Queen of the night (song to perfection by Whitney's backing vocalists) - My love is your love (overwhelming response by the audience, Whitney loves it, great version, an amazing ending, with a surprise : Bobby Brown joins Whitney on stage...
- Medley : . I wanna dance with somebody who loves me/ . How will I know The crowd went wild. Boby Brown joins his lady again on the stage. What a dancer ! They dance together.
Whitney sings Gospel : Withney invites the people to go to church.
- Jesus loves me (very well sung, from the soundtrack of the Bodyguard) - Medley . I love the lord/ . I go to the rock
Whitney is very persuavive. Beautiful renditons.
A fan requested a song ("The greatest love of all". Whitney interrupts the band who starts to play the intro of "I believe in you and me".
- THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL (a major rarity on this tour, a real gem) - Whitney at the Movies : Medley . I believe in you and me (from "The preacher's wife; a very touching shortened version . Why does it hurt so much (from "Waiting to Exhale", great reading) . I will always love you (from "The Bodyguard", a very strong rendition, one of the best versions I have ever heard, during this rendition I've observed some very beautiful expressions on Whitney's face) After thanking the audience for coming and for the lovely reception and support, Whitney left the stage... After 5 minutes she came back to perform one more song. - Encore : It's not right but it's Okay A fantastic song, excellent choreography, outstanding version, what an apotheosis ! Conclusion : Whitney's performance was outstanding. She sounds fresh and higly enthousiastic. Whitney never sounded better in her whole career. Her performance was undoubtedly spurred on by the enthousiastic audience and by the presence of her husband Bobby Brown. The high point of the performance was in my book the very beautiful version of the "The greatest love of all". Although I really enjoyed " I learned from the best, "Step by Step" and "I will always love you". Whitney got rightly so several standing ovations !
Whitney - Thank you very much for an absolutely memorable unforgettable evening. You gave the Belgium fans an evening to remember ! You're still "simply the best" and we will always love you. Till next time !
