Simply the best

Posted by Rita on October 25, 1999:

Concert date: 10/23/99 Vienna, Austria

Review of the show:
I went to the two concerts in Vienna. In my opinion the second one was much better than the first one, not because of Whitney's voice, but because the sound mixing on the first night put the band to loud, and Whitney's voice. And because on the second night I sat at the sixth row of the South Tribune, which was one of the best places, while on the first show I was on the second ring on the back of the arena. Once Whitney's performance was overall the same, meaning, her voice was great on both shows, the main differences between thw sows will be covered at the overall impressions, at the end of the review.

This was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

At 20:50, about 20 minutes after the amazing Amanda Marshall finished her part, we started to hear the usual intro to every Whitney concert, which turned out to Get It Back.

Whitney appeared at the top of the stars wearing, black pants, top and boots, with bejewled belt and jacket.

GIB

Unlike last night the sound on Friday was much better, with Whitney's voice raising above the band. I must say Whitney's voice was much stronger this night than on Friday.

IITYT

After GIB came an amazing version of IITYT that included some hight notes that are not on the recorded version.

HH

Continuing non stop to HH, once again Whitney amazed the audience with a great performance of HH. She then ended HH with the Jacksons 5 HH.

After the first 3 songs Whitney said hello to the Vienna audience stating that the first three songs were from her new CD MLIYL, and asked us if we had bought it. Then she stated that the saturday show was the last one for some of her band members: Cindy Mizelle, that went home to have her baby, and one of the keybord players, Jetro da Silva, that went home to get married.

SAMLFY

After this introduction, she asked us if she could take us back to 1985, and began one of the greatest performances of SAMLFY. She sang this song almost a capella, and her voice sounded so strong and clear, that it sent chills down my spine.

UYCBTM

After a long high note, that ended the first chorus of SAMLFY, Whitney began to sing UYCBTM. Once again this performance was oout of this world, and Whitney added some great high notes to the original ones.

ILFTB

The following song was ILFTB, the new single, and once again Whitney's voice showed stronger than ever.

SBS

The first part of the show ended with a powerful performance of Step By Step.

During Whitney's change, her brother Gary gave an excellent performance of Change the World.

MLIYL

Whitney than came out in a dark grey gown, with a green fur and green shoes, to give an amazing performance of MLIYL, towards the end of the song Whitney was joined by an electric Bobby Brown.

IWDWS(WLM)/HWIK

Then came her dance classics, an amazing updated version of IWDWS, and HWIK.

TLIMS

Then, after asking us if she could take us to church, she then aknowledge the band members that were leaving, Cindy Mizelle and Jetro de Silva, and began to sing TLIMS a capella to both of them. And you could feel the love and friendship between Whitney and Cindy when the later began to cry emotionally.

JLM

Then she went on to sing an incredible version of Jesus Loves Me

ILTL

Has some of you have stated Whitney always excells in this song. And really no words can describe her performance on this song.

IGTTR

Then she began a powerful performance. And introduced her band. Thanking Cindy for always being there for her, helping her in so many different ways.

IBIYAM/WDIHSB/IHLH

Then Whitney asked us if she could sing us some love songs, and explained she was going to sing the love themes from her movies. And gave an amazingly powerful performance of this three songs. And you can truly believe that it is for performances like this that she is known as the voice.

IWALY

Then came the song everyone was waiting for, and she didn't dissapointed us. She gave her all during this song. This performance was particularly emotional because it was directed at Cindy Mizelle, and Jetro de Silva, the two band members that were leaving.

Then Whitney said goodnight and gave a big hug on Jetro de Silva on her way out.

INRBIO

After about ten minutes Whitney came out, wearing a black top, blue capri pants and pink fur and boots, to give a rousing rendition of INRBIO.

Overall Impressions

1. For someone who has been touring for almost 4 months Whitney's voice was in EXCELLENT condition, as she was hitting high notes like she hasn't been hitting in a long, long time.

2.Whitney seems to be more relaxed and more comfortable whith herself and her voice. She seems more loose in her performance, and it shows on her voice that came out as strong, powerful and clear as you can get from her.

3. For those of you that say that Whitney's voice will never be the same. Guess what? You're right. But unlike you meant, her voice will never be the same, because it is much richer, deeper, and stronger than ever, in other words, she never sounded better.

4. Like I said in the beginning, the two shows had some differences.

4.1. The first difference was clothes wise. On the first show Whitney was wearing bejewled capri pants with a lblack top, green long fur and green shoes for the first part, Long silver gown, with flowers painted, yellow fur and yellow shoes for the second part, and black top with red fur and black boots and bejeweled mini skirt for the encore.

4.2. The second main difference was that before the gospel segment she brought a child up to stage anf thanked him for being on her concert.

4.3 Another big difference was that she didn't sing neither TLIMS, or JLM, but rather another gospel number, that I had never heard before.

4.4. Last, but not least, she aknowledge her percussionist's, Taku Hirano, birthday during the band presentation and ad libed some happy birthday to you to him.
