Even from the back of an arena, Whitney is the best!

Posted by Colin on September 13, 1999:

Concert date: 9/11/99 Birmingham, UK

Review of the show:
I have to admit our seats weren't the best; we were 3/4 of the way back on the top row, but because we were so high up we could see the whole arena. Unfortunately the crowd were not very responsive to begin with, which annoyed me because I really wanted to party to GIB and IITYT! Heartbreak Hotel in between these two openers was absolutely breathtaking; the sound engineers must have been utilising some echoing system, and Whitney knew exactly how to use it aswell. Step by Step (the finale of the first half) was the first song to get everyone up, and by the time she came back on people were finally into it, dancing for IEW and IWDWS. Surprisingly, HWIK was one of three real crowd poppers of the night . . . I know it's a great song but I didn't expect people to go quite so crazy! They loved it and it was wonderful to see so many thousands of people with their hands in the air in unison! The gospel numbers were Whitney's chance to really show off her voice and she certainly did. Although these songs weren't as well known, the crowd responded due to the energy in her voice. My Love Is Your Love was the second big pop for Whitney: you could hear the crowd singing along like a huge choir! And IWALY goes without saying; this isn't one of my favourite of hers but the way she sings it is truly impeccable. She did milk the crowd like at Divas 99 and they were only to happy to oblige. INRBIO was a fitting encore aswell, and the energy she put into this song really emphasised how she must have been genuinely enjoying herself up there. Pity there was no "I Bow Out", "I Have Nothing" or, in particular "Exhale", but I guess you can't have everything! Well worth it, despite our seats!
