THE DIVA IN THE ATL

Posted by TERRI H on August 02, 1999:

Concert date: 7/21/99 Atlanta, GA

Review of the show:
It was Wednesday 7/21/99, and all of my efforts to receive the hook up on FREE Whitney Houston tickets had failed. So much for my connections.... I was forced to purchase a ticket on the day of the concert from ticketmaster. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't already paid a fortune to see Whitney in Chicago, but what the hell, it's Whitney and I'm a huge fan. To my surprise, I was able to get seats in the orchestra pit, three rows back, center stage. I close enough to reach out and touch her if I wanted to. I was too happy!! Needless to say my fiancé did not understand me spending another $125 to see the same show I had already seen in Chicago, so needless to say I went alone!!

I arrived around 8:30 p.m., 112 was just finishing up there act. Whitney hit the stage a little after 9pm.... I had already heard from a few people that she was hoarse for the first show on Tuesday, so I really didn't know what to expect. But I must say, I wasn't disappointed......Her voice was much stronger in Chicago (which is why I elected to see her at the beginning of her tour, I knew her voice would wear thin as time went on), but she still sounded good and she seemed more relaxed and into her routine in this show.

She added in extra's that I didn't get in Chicago, she let the audience help with singing SS, BK danced with her and rapped and then the show took a GHETTO turn for the worst when her baby's daddy came out on stage to inform us that his new album would be out in 2 months (who really gives a S#%@!!) All in all - I enjoyed the show tremendously...towards the end I could tell that Whitney was definitely straining her vocal cords. On her next to last song IWALU, she had a hard time hitting the YOU's, her background singer had to handle most of those and during her encore song, I could tell that her vocals were almost out and her energy level was down...but it was still a wonderful show. I wasn't surprised to hear that she had cancelled her next show in Memphis, it was very obvious to see that she was struggling....not to appear selfish or anything, but I’m glad that she didn’t cancel her second Atlanta show.

HIGHLIGHT – I will have to say that it was her I love the Lord and I go to the Rock songs. Although, I must agree with Rachel, why can’t she sing another variety of gospel songs, I’m sure she knows plenty. But she let it all hang out in this set, you can really tell Whitney loves her Lord. She even got HAPPY!! (for those of us who are not familiar with HAPPY, it means she became filled with the sprit, excited)

Overall, it was a delightful performance and I’ll be there front row and center at the next WH World Tour!!(I just hopes she gets a different promoter, plays larger venues, which in turn will make ticket prices go DOWN!!)

Peace
