Atlanta Journal-Constitution Review

Review of the show:
Warm Welcome For Whitney at Fox

by Sonia Murray, pop music critic

Standout: Singer wins over crowd with strong vocals, smooth moves.

Verdict: Whatever you think of Whitney Houston, see her, and know that she is PEERLESS!

It's been a long time since Whitney Houston heard a real "Yeah, girl." Not just because the pop singer's only been in front of a concert audience one other time this decade (INCORRECT INFO), but because for a time, she wasn't everybody's girl. The "Soul Train Awards" audience once booed her name, on television's "In Living Color," she was parodied for being part of a "Rhythmless Nation," while others simply charged her with being too pristine and pop for some tastes. None of these people had experienced the accessible, engaging and remarkably strong-voiced Houston who perfomed the first of a two-night stand at The Fox Theatre Tuesday. The veteran of some 14 years did everything you wouldn't expect a VH1 diva to do while still putting on an UNFETTERED, STELLAR SHOW. She may have entered wearing Dolce and Gabanna, but that didn't stop Houston from chastising the near sold-out crowd in playful fashion when its "shoops" weren't loud enough; holding church during the singer/actresses' standout selections from "The Preacher's Wife," and showing off bouncy dance steps with husband Bobby Brown who joined in on the side of the stage.
