Whitney Houston abruptly canceled her concert less than a half-hour before show time Sunday at the Concord Pavilion. The reason was illness.

It was her fifth cancellation in the past month. The 16-city tour, her first in five years, started June 22 in Chicago. The Concord date was to be the final U.S. show before the tour resumes August 22 in Poland.

``We got a call a little after 7 o'clock saying she wouldn't be making it,'' said Concord Pavilion spokesman Brad Schulenberg.

Her management office released a short statement yesterday morning: ``After two sold-out performances at Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheater, Whitney Houston took sick and was unable to perform at the Concord Pavilion outside San Francisco.''

About half the expected 9,000 fans were in the house at Concord when the cancellation was announced. The show has not been rescheduled, but refunds can be obtained at the place of purchase.
