Live in Toronto: Oh yessss!
~ Part Two ~
Review by: Rachel The Webmaster.
Concert date: June 29/99
Venue: Molson Amphitheatre
Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Review of the show:
"Heartbreak Hotel"
WH checked into the Heartbreak Hotel and we all went with her. She did this song very well. It
sounds better when she does it by herself than with K.P. and F.E. After seeing both the French
TV appearance (Feb. 1999) and this live version, I am now convinced that WH should have done
this song alone to begin with. And she also did a little "looking at my watch" move when she
sang "you'd be here by nine". And she got the crowd to sing the climax of the song with her.
"If I Told You That"
This song has a groove on record, but live, the groove is so undeniable that you just have to bob
your head to the beat. And WH did my fave (bossy) part at the end "I said if I told you! if I told
you!". She had the bossy voice and her hand on her hip. U da boss Whitney! U da boss! I a
convinced now more than ever that this would be a great single to release.
RTWM's comment:
After 3 songs, it became clear that the weather did not affect WH's voice. How can I describe her
vocal strength that nite? If the 1980s are a 10, then this was a 9.9! Oh yeeeees! Whitney was
hitting high notes for fun. You know, when the song requires it, she has to hit the "you" in
IWALY and SAML4Y... Well, WH was in such good shape that nite that she was ADDING high
notes that weren't there "just for fun of it [Diet Coke]!". Just like she used to do in the eighties. I
swear. I know it looks like I'm making this up but I can't tell U how happy I was to hear The
Voice! ...but the best was yet to come! [I'll say more on this further down...] I'm starting to
wonder if this is divine intervention -- that I got the best Europe concert last year in Paris, and
again the best of the N. America Tour this year. It can't be a coincidence.
"Saving All My Love For You"
This is *my* song! And I have heard it a million times, a hundred different versions, bootleg
concerts, TV appearances, etc. Is it possible for WH to come up with a newer, refreshed
interpretation of this classic? Oh Yeeeees! And I am Telling You -- this was one of the most
memorable versions! OHMIGOD!
Whitney took her sweet time to do the first verse and the first chorus, milking all she could out of
every note, singing each to it's fullest. Those high notes rolled off her tongue with such ease and
souplesse, like they did in 1986. OHMIGOD! OHMIGOD!
It was quasi-acappella -- there was very little background music: only (barely) the chords... All
there was for you to hear was The Voice! In all it's original glory! OHMIGOD! OHMIGOD! OHMIGOD!
