Live in Toronto: Oh yessss!
~ Part One ~
Review by: Rachel The Webmaster.
Concert date: June 29/99
Venue: Molson Amphitheatre
Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Review of the show:
Background info:
Carlos and I arrived almost 2 hours early to the Box Office, eager to get our Platinum Tickets.
Carlos had his heart set on front row seats, but I was not as optimistic, having had previous bad
experiences with the PC club. But we were elated when we read "Row A" on our tickets!
Upon sitting down, we realized that we were not only in the front row, but FRONT ROW
CENTRE! "I get so emotional, baby!"
It was cold. For some reason, Mother Nature decided to cut the normal 100 degree weather in
half that day. And we all know that Whitney doesn't sing well in the cold. I didn't see any heaters
on the stage and I got a little worried. To be honest, I was worried sick. Stomach turning. The
whole bit.
Opening Act: 112
112 were actually a very good show. They sang their #1 hit "Only You" and each member of the
group had a solo, which comprised of a remake. The cutest one (IMO) started with Stevie
Wonder's "Ribbons In the Sky". OHMIGOD! It was outstanding, (as all Stevie
Wonder songs are IMO.) They sang, they danced, they were great! I was impressed. The dancers got in their positions and the most beautiful one nodded "hi" to me. She smiled at me, but I think she may
have been laughing at me cuz I must have looked "so emotional". :-)
The Diva enters
At 9PM, WH promptly entered the stage from the left railing. She was wearing a Dolce &
Gabbana outfit: capri pants -- lime green and flashy pink. Two colours that I don't really like,
together or apart. She was wearing a black turtle neck, presumable because of the cold. Her fur
coat (red-dark pink-black cow patched) and her lime green patent alligator boots completed this
ensemble. I don't recall seeing WH in an uglier outfit since, perhaps, the early 80s. Honest. Dolce
& Gabbana need to take lessons from classy Versace or even Prada would not have been so
ridiculously tacky. OK, enough D&G bashing -- for now.
"Get It Back"
This song sounds better live that on CD, but it was still not enough to move a crowd of trembling
cold Torontonians who, for the most part, have never heard this song before. There are a
choreography to this song. We all know WH isn't the best dancer, but I think she's been taking
lessons lately. I swear! There was no "jumping up and down" or the usual stuff she does. At age
35, WH is showing us her best dance moves yet! Go Whitney!
