Whitney:The Queen of the Night and the Queen of our Hearts

Which Concert: July 11 Aschaffenburg
Posted by Trevor P. on July 12, 1998:

" I'm Every Woman , It's All in Me". Whitney commenced out of view, with this song, then made her grand entrance, from below the stage, by way of a mechanical lift. It was impressive as she wore a red pants suit which was laced with sequins at the breast, on the sleeves and at the hem of the long sleeved blouse. And yes, indeed , she was every woman and much more that night as she smoothly danced to this tune with her daughter, Bobby K. At the end of the first song she then looked at her watch and struck a very sweet note to these words "The clock strikes upon the hour and the sun begins to fade". This tune was coincidentally even more fitting as the sun , probably in anticipation of Whitney, faded only thirty minutes earlier (laughs)
She sang other songs like " So emotional", "All the Man That I need" ; "All at once", "Didn't we Almost have it All" etc. She returned to the back centre of the stage and decended on the mechanical lift .

She returned to the stage some minutes later dressed in a blue pants suit, the jacket of which was also draped with sequins. Just before coming off of the mechanical lift , we could hear this magical line in song, " I'm comming out, I want this word to know" But with such an angelic melody she didn't need to say another word as we were already sure that Nippy was the one
coming out. She entered the stage from the lift and continued with a brilliant delivery of a Diana Ross Medley. Although Whitney's voice was not at the 100% level the richness and sweetness was still ever present.

However, halfway through the show, or thereabout, the show was interrupted as there was a power cut . The stage lights stayed out and the microphones remained 'dead' for over 15 minutes. Whitey , in showing great respect for the crowd, shouted most of the time, without a microphone, saying that she would not leave until the power came back. The shouting and the chilly wind that was blowing was to have pushed Nippy's Voice to the limit. ( Remember also that she already did 9 shows which would have affected the state of her voice)

However, Nippy was very determined that night to give of her best as she normally does. She nevertheless gave stunnig renditions but was unable to reproduce the falseto notes ( the soft high pitched notes) as that department of her vocal range was by now somewhat affected. But believe me her renditions were nonetheless great . Nippy's creativity was also displayed as she improvised with a line about the power cut while doing "I go to the Rock". This song was powerfully done as Whitney skillfully handled it briliantly note for note.

Suddenly Whitney caused an electrifying mood in the stadium as she started getting real personal with the audience . She mentioned that was considering quiting touring and or singing but that her tour manager convinced her not to.The crowd responded by saying "No way, Whitney Don't Go" (Para phrased). She replied saying that she will not.

But the highlight of the evening was when Nippy started singing "I will always love you". She chaged the mood of this song and improvised by praising her mother her brother and other members of the group. Then this magic happened. Tears began to flow. Nippy started, first followed by her brother , mother the back up singers and also many of the fans. ( including your's truly and other users that we are familiar with on this sight).

She returned (in a white shirt , blue jeans and a grey- black shiny jacket, after leaving the stage to perform the 'encöre' Step By Step which was well done. When you talk about stage presence, Nippy has got it. She had the audience rocking ,singing, screaming and dancing throughout the show.

This show was profound. The theme of it , in my opinion was Love: Motherly love, Brother/sisterly Love, Love for children and Love for the fans.

The evening was full of love and yes Nippy really does give good love.

All in all the show was powerful. She did not sing a few notes due to vocal problems but yes, she is a consumate entertaner. She is the best.
