Simply The Best....Not Tina, But Whitney

Posted by Dave on April 15, 1999:

IWALY:
To be honest, in the beginning I was a little nervous regarding Whitney's performance of this all-time classic. I was afraid that she would perform it the way that she did in her HBO special. However, much to my surprise girlfriend performed the song almost flawlessly. It sounded almost as good as the recorded version, with a little more soul, but not quite as effortlessly. It would be a wise move on Arista's part to include this as a track on her next CD single. Practically everyone saw or heard about the performance and I think that people would by the single not necessarily for the title song, but rather for this live performance!

It's Not right but It's OK:
When Whitney first opened her mouth I could tell that her voice was much clearer and crisp that in some of her recent performances. I'm not sure what she did to prepare for this show but whatever it was most certainly worked. I thought her subtle moves with the choreographed dancers where classy, yet sassy. It amazes me how she danced with those hi pumps on and never missed a beat.

Ain't No Way:
This too should be a track on one of her upcomming singles! I thought she and Mary sounded nice together

My Love Is Your Love:
It was OK. Actually, my least favorite WH song of all time. Although the words are profound, this song does nothing to showcase her golden vocal cords.

I'm Every Woman:
It was OK. Whitney sounded good but you could barely hear her under Chaka's screaming and howling. Chaka wasn't even singing, she was litterally just screaming...devoid of any melody.

Overall impressions on 'Divas Live' Show:
Overall, I was very pleased and impressed with Whitney's performance. I haven't seen her perform like this since the duet with CeCe Winans at the Grammy's in 94 or 95. Whitney most definitely stole the show. I think she realized that the viewership for this show was going to be in the millions and this was her chance to make up for the HBO fiasco, show her fans that she's still the same WH, and finally to help boost the sell of her new album. I would say that Tina and Leanne tied for the second best performances. Although I truly adore Brandy's music and admire her tenacity as a well-rounded, premiere entertainer, she was without a doubt the worst performer. She even admitted herself on live TV that she didn't think she'd have a voice...well, she didn't. Cher was OK, although she WORKED those boot cut leather pants! Faith was OK, but can someone tell me why she was even invited? My 'dream' Dive show would include WH, Patti Labelle, Diana Ross, Mariah, Stephanie Mills, and Jennifer Holiday. Oh, and has Elton John gained major weight or what!?!
