Truly Disappointed with Whitney

Posted by derkuli on April 14, 1999:

IWALY:
To be quite honest I was very upset at the fact that Whitney no longer has the voice she had about 5 years ago. I was horrified to see and hear Whitney not use her false setto to send those musical notes where no Diva could ever go. Whitney can no longer rely on that. It was a true disappointment hearing this performance and the deterioration of such a fine musical instrument: her voice.

It's Not right but It's OK:
I loved Whitney's red leather outfit. I also did enjoy the anger, roughness, and true emotion in her voice. Once again I was upset to see that she could not hit her upper middle range notes. The dancers and their tacky outfits (we've seen such outfits in Total's video) should have been left backstage. All in all, Whitney showed that she was the Diva. I love her long and lean body!!!

Ain't No Way:
Ain't no way Mary J can compete with Whitney!!! I feel Whitney could have carried this song all on her own. She did it already on her Classic Whitney concert and as all her fans know, it was amazing!!! (On the Friday night concert, not the one telecast live on Sunday). Anyway, I feel that the improvisation towards the final chorus of the song made it difficult to understand who was singing what. Whitney should have done this on her own...but I know she likes to give her girlfriends an opportunity to sing with her.

My Love Is Your Love:
I love this song so much as I do all the songs on the album. I totally hated her outfit but I know that Whitney has ALWAYS worn outfits that do not particularly satisfy the tastes of the masses. Aside from that, I love how Whitney has total control of an audience and she can make them jive to a slamming groove like MLIYL. Her voice was in good condition for this song.

I'm Every Woman:
I loved Whitney's outfit and that coat was fabulous!!! Chaka Khan on the other hand should have had some hot tea before stepping out on that stage because her voice was truly scratchy! Chaka was screaming the notes instead of singing them. Whitney could have done this on her own as well. I truly did not enjoy this performance.

Overall impressions on 'Divas Live' Show:
All in all, I was very disappointed with the Divas Concert. There were too many singers and some of them did not deserve to be labeled as a Diva. Brandy was totally copying Whitney's mannerisms on stage. She walked, moved her arms, her neck just like Whitney. I know Whitney is truly a large influence on these up and coming singer, but Come On, Brandy!!! Please have some originality.

I did expect too much from Whitney, though. I wanted her voice to be flawless and unfortunately she could not provide that. Her voice is not as good as it used to be. If she would lay off of the cigarette smoking, it would help out a lot. I also recommend that she take some serious voice lessons, too. She cannot lose whatever is left of that instrument: her voice.
