The Greatest Fan Meet Of All In Atlantic CityConcert date: 01/7/00 Atlantic City
Review of the show: Rodney drove from VA to Baltimore and followed us to AC. I must say in hindsight that we should have caught the bus because the traffic was incredible. We didn't get into AC until 5:20 and of course we were stressing that we would miss the fan meet. I'm going to skip over some details because it's just too much drama. We got over to Caesar's Palace about 7:20 and went straight to the venue. There was already quite a line forming in front of the Circus Maximus Theatre. I didn't know how anyone looked except Alan M, as I've met him before. I spotted him on the line and quickly got my very lovely CW/WF cap all complete with my name enscribed at the back. Turned out that these caps were very hot commodities! Thanks again for providing these mementos of this concert. It's always a joy to see you and talk to you. However, I agree, Dan wins the award for the Super Whitney fan! Alan, I must digress to state that your dressing in your car is soo ghetto! You just had me busting out in laughter, I didn't know that but we Whitney fans know how to adjust to various situations, don't we? Alan, Rodney and I all dispersed to our various seating locations. I must say that I LOVED this venue. It seemed very plush and lavish. It was small but not overly so. I was seated dead center, right behind the control booth. Alan M later brought over LisaD to my table. (Lisa, thanks for the gift, that was very generous and kind of you- I appreciate it!) He said that she spotted him because of the cap. Lisa: It was my pleasure to meet her. I enjoyed chatting with her. I also met the very happy Quent, Joe23, NYJohn, and other Whitney fans. I spotted Whitney's brother Gary and her mom as they came in and went backstage. Only the Whitney fans knew who they were. Alan, later came over to my table to inform me that Deb Cox was in attendance. I tell you, whenever you go to a Whitney concert, there most likely will be some star in attendance. It was going on 9:10 and Whit was not on yet. People were starting to get impatient. Then the lights went down and one could feel the excitement. We were majorly disappointed when a comic named Louis Reemy(sp?) came on stage especially as he wasn't announced. He bombed, Plain and simple. He said one line about some things that he could do and a fan yelled, '....yeah, why don't you bring Whitney on!...' I have to say that he was pretty pathetic and he knew it. People wanted to see Whitney. When he left about 9:45pm, the lights went down again and one could hear the excitement and murmurs as the curtain lifted to reveal Whitney's band. They had some psychedelic light show going on in the back on a screen and they started to jam. Later, they segwayed into the strings for 'Get it back' and Whit appeared. She was in a black, long gown with silver metallic/gems/glitter as the waistline and bejewelled neck. Let me just say that she looked Splendid. Totally refreshed, relaxed, happy and beautiful. Her hair was similar to the vid for CIHTKF but a little longer and it was flipped. Whitney entered the stage belting. I don't want to be longwinded but let me just say that Whitney didn't sing any one song last night the same. She did some fabulous adlibs on ALL of the songs. She started ripping'can we, can we, can we, get it back, get it back, get it baaaaaaaaaaaack' with all the attitude that only she could muster. She was very mobile around the stage. She later went on to IITYT by asking the crowd'...if I told you that I love you, what would you do?' She also did alot of adlibs in this song. All throught the night, shouts of 'I love You Whitney, You look gorgeous,,,' could be heard. Right into HH, people were shouting'....you look beautiful, you look gorgeous girl!, we love you...' she did some posing and answered back 'anymore?' in response to the compliments. Whitney was very gracious, she shouted back so many thank you's to the crowd and offered thanks for our support even though she knows it's know easy. Several times she said, you all are kind, thank you very much. After singing HH, (Sharlotte, took the high part) she said, now I'm going to do my friend Michael Jackson and she effortlessly seged into 'This is heartbreak hotel'. She sang one verse of it. Before starting HH, she said, I know we've all been there before, now it's time for you to check out. She then sang 'UYCB.' I loved this song because she did some great adlibs on this. Towards the end, she sang, until you come back to me on Thursday, 12-0-1, on thursday, 12-0-1, u're coming home to MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! The crowd was really feeling her as she did the gospel 'oooohhhs, mmmmmmsss, mmmm-hmmmmm'. I was really feeling them. The audience was screaming 'take your time girl, you sing Whitney'. It was really great to see the support because most of the crowd were older people and casino customers. When I saw her in '98 in AC, the crowd was not into it the way they were now although at a concert, the crowd would have been even more into it. It was good to hear the support. She then did ILFTB and really did a wonderful job. I think someone already posted the set list. However, I must say that if you haven't seen Whitney live, you're really missing out. I'm so in amazement of the power of her mid-belt. When she sang 'SAMLFY' she sang it all power and she milked the lines. People seemed to really like this one only thing it was too short. Love Medley I loved all of the songs here. She basically did what she did on the MLIYL tour. She first said that she wanted to introduce some special guests. She introduced Deb Cox who stood up. Whitney really gave her props. She said this is my latest duet partner, we did a song together, SSDC and she is a terrific singer, she can hang with the best of them, Ms. Deborah Cox. She also introduced David Gest who was seated next to Deb and said that he was Michael Jackson's best friend and that he is the guy to call when you want something done. She cracked some jokes on him. Then she asked..'....Where is my mamma, where's my mommy?' And Cissy Houston stood up. Whitney said, 'that's my mommy, CH, she's the best, she's just the best!' I loved IBIYAM (which was done similar to the Arista Special- it sounds amazing live with all that power). WDIHSB was simply beautiful as she was really into this song. She adlibbed and did alot of those gospel embellishments here. Next she sang Aretha's 'It Hurts Like Hell.' I LOVE this version. I wish she would just go on and record it. Whitney was sitting in a chair for the love medley. Up next was IWALY. It was something to see her writh in the chair as she sang and dug for the feeling. It amazes me that Whitney can feel her songs differently each time she sings them because she totally changes the arrangements or do new adlibs. It's frustrating as a Whitney fan to know this and not have her commit this to vinyl so others can know of this gift as well. She remains one of the true, last, vocal interpretators to this day. None of her contemporaries can touch her and she was ALL LIVE with lots of dancing! Take note!! She sang IWALY last and it amazed me that she got the notes for this song because when she sang IWDWS, she didn't attempt any of the high notes. After the song, she said I recorded those songs before BK and this is me after BK as she laughed. From reading the Friday reviews, she seemed to really have expended her voice on Friday. Perhaps she should not do songs back to back. However, her mid-belt was so ON! It was in overdrive and Whitney began and ended the show ripping and belting. She also sang 'SBS' which she stated was her favorite song. I wasn't sure if she was referring to that night or not. However, she seemed to derive joy from singing 'I'm taking it step by step, day by day. I sort of felt that that song was her mantra. As she came to the climax o the song, she stood up and asked for someone to brink her a mic stand. The crowd seemed to be into this diva move as she prepared herself. She dropped her hanky and went for it. I thought she did a really good job. I sort of understand what Alan M was talking about when she goes into the Love Medley. The inevitabilitiness(not sure if it's a word) of the fact that one knows that her show is coming to an end makes it bittersweet. I forgot to say that she changed midway into the show. Gary sang 'Change the World' He's really a very good singer. After, he sang CTW, the band laughed into a medley which I didn't get until the BU singers started to sing 'I wanna dance' in a totally reworked/funky fashion. Whitney, came back on stage with a blue gown with some hint of sparkle in it. She had attached to it a navy blue diva robe type cape which was lined in feathers. She really knows how to work it. She did her little salsa dance to IWDWS(it was a remixed version). After she left the stage after IWALY. People were calling for her to come back out and 'give them one more'. She came back out after about 5mins and called for them to bring her duet partner out. She said, this is Kristina Brown, Ms. Bobbi Kristina Brown. She said this is our song. She was standing very close to BK and as Whitney sang the first lines...'if tomorrow is judgement day', BK jumped in and said 'sing mommy!'. Whitney, asked the band to stop and start over as she just wanted to hear BK sing that part again. Whitney, stooped down on her heels to be at BK's level for nearly 3/4s of the song and sang the first 2 verses in almost a lullabye voice. She and Sharlotte did some great harmonizing and all the bellows of 'Oh!, Oh yeah!' were there. She then got up and sang to the crowd something that sounded like 'let's jam tonight!, get up, let's jam tonight. she was all over the stage jumping and dancing as she did that little 'brrrrrakkkk' thing that she does. I think of all the songs which she sang, MLIYL moved me the most. I've heard and saw her sing this song many a time even with BK but something was different last night. She was cuddling her, kissing her, holding her against her side, just looking at her with AWE in her eyes. It was really something. I almost shed tears and BK was just smiling as she saw her mom do silly things like jumping up and down. Whitney ended the show by saying, thank you, you've been very kind, may God bless and keep you. The she said, 'The record is NEVER over!' I have to say that this show was better than the AC'98 shows by 150%. I would say that when I saw her in Philly in '99 that that show was better in that she sang more songs and she hit ALL of her soprano notes. This show wasn't as good overall because she didn't sing as much and she didn't hit all of her notes. Let me be clear that when she went for them, they were there IWDWS was just sung as she was caught up in dancing. She did all the notes on IWALY and ILFTB and I believe UYCB. This show was better than the Philly show in that I was much closer to Whitney, it was a very intimate setting, it was very comfortable in the plush chairs, waitresses served drinks and I could clearly see Whitney's face and details of her clothes. Overall, both shows were great for different reasons. I must state again for all the people who love DETAILS that Whitney looked GREAT!!! She was beautiful, gracious, kind, relaxed, juvenated, I can go on and on. I must be honest and admit that I thought that she may not give it her all for this second show or any of them for that matter especially seeing the negative weight she has been under. To my utter joy, she gave a very, very energetic show and she seemed to be enjoying herself. Did I say that she looked Great! We hung around for about 20mins at my table talking about the show before the staff told us that we had to leave as they were cleaning. Whatever! We all went down to Planet Hollywood where we all had a bite to eat and continued to chat. (Warning: Their food is horrible!) Alan M showed me the Japanese version of WTGH with the lyrics. It's worth the buy. We hung out until about 1am! Again, it was such a pleasure to meet so many posters from both sites and to finally put faces to names. Today, Rodney and NYjohn and i had breakfast at 11am and didn't leave the restaurant until 2:35pm!!!!! That's why I'm just posting. I enjoyed meeting and spending time with both of you. I'm sure that we will do this again in the future. p.s. many people after the show who didn't go wanted to know how she did. Interesting, I wonder if the Enquirer had their people out there! lol! It was just great to see her in such a happy spirit. I wish that I could see the Monday show!! p.s.p.s. The show was sold out!
