"The Princess Diaries" is based on a novel by Meg Cabot. The film was produced for Disney by Whitney Houston's Brownhouse Productions, in association with Mario Iscovich. It premiered at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood and was released in the U.S. on August 3, 2001. The film earned more than $100 million at the U.S. box office, resulting in a sequel in 2004.
