Disney's 'Cheetah Girls' A Bust submitted by: Lisa D. source: Hartford Courant Date: August 15, 2003 By ROGER CATLIN; Courant TV Critic With just a few original episodes left of "Lizzie McGuire" (Disney, 7:30 p.m.) (tonight's is a rerun), Hilary Duff is out as Disney's big star, and Raven is on the rise. Already her sitcom, "That's So Raven," (Disney, 7 p.m.), is a hit. But her starring turn in the musical "The Cheetah Girls" (Disney, 8 p.m.) isn't exactly warming. The adaptation of Deborah Gregory's books has either doing her neck-rolling comic bit or being the overbearing leader of her overly professional high school girl group, whose immediate goal is to win the school talent contest. If they sound a lot like girl groups of a few years ago, it's because two members of 3LW represent half of the group. But the action is predictable, from the near-breakout of the four to the meddling of a dim record company, rendered cartoon-like. But, then again, this is Disney. Though its run of original Friday-night movies have included a lot of winners, especially those having to do with sports, the forced glam and awful ending of "Cheetah Girls" had tweens in my house yawning.
