I'm guessing this performance was after the Oprah performance.
Yep. 4 months after.

Yep.

Wasn't she supposed to sing at the 2000 Oscars?

I've never really understood this performance. During the Oprah performance they had a solid friendship connection. They hugged at the end. But this Oscar performance it was as if they had an argument before going on stage and Whitney was playing with Mariah. Mariah just stood there like a clown. At at the end.. don't know if you've ever noticed this, they didn't hug like they did on Oprah, Whitney was the only one to say "thank you" and Mariah looked like she was in a rush to exit the stage - Mariah also gave the fakest smile ever This video is the longest footage I've seen. And it's longer at the end. I'm guessing this performance was after the Oprah performance.

Kevin, I'm so surprised you don't hear why the embarrassment of Mariah. Mariah loses her note (read: her part of the harmony) during the bridge 3 different times and starts to sing Whitney's note. That's why Whitney just up and stops singing at one point so Mariah could hear herself clearly to find her own note. Sadly, Mariah never recovers her note, even after the bridge. She's either all the way flat or unbearably sharp. Mariah was genuinely embarrassed, and I can't say I blame her.

I was thinking along the same lines but didn't know how to write it. When watching/listening to that video, it is obvious, and at times really hard to follow because Mariah isn't singing her note. It's actually confusing to watch/listen to because I have the studio version in my head of what each of them sound like and unfortunatley Mariah was "off" this night. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was the intimidating diva next to her bringin it,...I don't know, but Whitney's..pause..if you will, makes sense to me, she was trying to get it back on course...IMO.

I see what you mean now about Mariah singing Whitney's part. But I can't hear where Whitney stops singing?
I don't think Mariah's floundering is really that noticeable though, because Whitney is just drowning her out for the most part from the bridge on.

Mariah was off that day. But that's kinda of expected. Even on the album version she sounded like a background vocalist more than a duet partner. But even if Mariah was on point on Oscar night, her voice would still be drowned by Whitney's. Whitney is a more powerful singer than Mariah Carey at any point in her career. Whitney's voice in 1999 easily trumps Mariah's voice in 1991.

OMG are you kidding? Mariah was fantastic on the album version, many people couldn't even decide who was the best on this duet.

No I'm not kidding. I'm not referring to the second verse where Mariah sings by herself. I'm saying the parts where Whitney and Mariah sing together. Mariah's voice sounds weak in comparison to Whitney's powerful voice. I admit I may be exaggerating when I said she sounded like a background singer. Mariah's vocals on the album version were GREAT, but it just sounds less powerful than Whitney.

I thought Mariah sounded good on both live performances and the cd. She was having an off day at the Oscars so Whitney completely drowned her out in the end but it was still a good performance. Whitney's voice is more powerful and expressive, but Mariah does her thing.
