Yes, those were the good old days....I watched the Album of the Year video too (from the same channel), there was some heavy competition (Whitney,Prince, MJ, U2....real artists, you know) I simply adore the '80's! :D
Whitney was totally cute when she took over her award. It's rare because she looked a bit shy. Usually she has more confidence when she got an award and have to do an acceptance speech. I put it down to the fact that she was still very young.

LOLOL!! Looks funny, doesn't it? Back in those days, the nominees/celeb attendees used to get onstage during award show finales, whether they could sing or not.

Literally my favorite performance of HUTL!  The begging was a bit more tame than Arsenio, but that ending?  Forgetaboutit!

Hey Kevin! Your are a great musician, can you confirm me what is the Whitney´s vocal range? It´s true she had 5 Octaves? There´s any video on youtube with her performances live that proves that? I remember I saw one but I can not find it now... <_<

I think she has a 3.5 octave range. And that's massive. If she had 5, we would've heard her doing whistle like Mariah. A piano has 7 octaves on it. Mariah has a 5 octave range. She doesn't have an 8 octave range. And Whitney has around 3.5-4 octave range (well she used to). I think she has 2.5-3 octaves now. I'm pretty sure she can hit C6 in her head voice now on a good day. She was hitting G5 in her head voice in Moscow on MITM.

But I heard it from another pianist that whitney's range has been 5 octaves at her peak and mariah's was claimed to be only 4. I personaly don't know much about octaves, but whatever it is something tells me whitney's better at it :P
For people who haven't seen her major performances showcasing her 'octaves' - as they call it. Here're my recomendations:
One moment it time, grammys 1988
Star spangled banner, super bowl
Greatest love of all, Statue of liberty
Didn't we almost have it all, New york
All at once, AMA, 1987
Do you hear what I hear, tonight show
Enjoy :)

Kevin, I somehow even doubt that Mariah had 5 octaves.  For her to have five, she would have had to be able to hit every note in between and she has a huge break in her range.  There's a few notes along the way that she can hit the sharp or the flat, but not the note itself if that makes sense.  (I don't play, but I have a CRAZY ear that picks up on every little thing.  Some folks call my ear 'instaear.'  LOL!)

PRAISE YOU! Someone else knows there's the "dead zone" of Mimi too! I was a lamb WAAAAY back in the day but I TOLD folks Mimi couldn't sing every note up to the whistle register. She's missing a few. Not hatin, just statin. That's why I never said or believed in the 5 octave thing. Yes--spans 5 octaves, but doesnt' include every not on the scale WITHIN the 5.
